MkII or MkIII?

Featured Replies

I will post this question here as well as in the Mk2 thread, please forgive me.

We are going to have a baby in December, and so wee need a bigger car.

Looking at the following models (Estate):

MkII

1,8 TSI 160

2,0 TDI 140

MkIII

1,2 TSI 105

1,4 TSI 140

1,6 TDI 105

Does anyone know roughly how they compare? I will commute 10km every day on a highway, and we will be using the car for vacation trips across Europe.

Is the MkIII worth waiting for to get in a used condition (saving some money)?

/Regards Evert

I currently have both.

The MkII for 5 years and been on vacation with 3 kids. 2 of them in baby/children seats and luggage for 5 people for a week. no problem.

The MkIII I got just a couple of weeks ago and if you ask the children its no Question, they love the extra legroom in the new car and the better seats in the back.

The MkIII is also big enough for a backward mounted baby seat in the front passenger seat with ISOFIX without losing to much legroom in the back.

See the pics in this link.. :)

The small seat is from birth to 13kg the big from birth to 18kg.

You also have to remember that the MkIII has better safety then the old model.

I have just moved from a mk2 2.0 fsi estate to a mk3 1.4 tsi estate and endorse what Kabe111 has posted. My daily run of 12 miles (rural/urban mix) averaged 32 miles per gallon in the fsi. So far the 1.4 is averaging 45.9, but it is still running in. It is smoother, quieter, bigger, more comfortable and feels at  least as fast as the 2.0 litre, up to the 4000 revs I am limiting it to at the moment. I had the mk 2 for 7 years from new and really enjoyed it, but the mk 3 is a significantly better car,  If you can wait, I think it's worth it.

I test drove a 1.4tsi estate, when I was trying to find a dealer that would let me test drive a diesel vRS, so that we could at least me sure that SWMBO could deal with the increase size (currently running mk1 Fabia vRS).

I was really impressed by the 1.4, it felt like a much bigger engine and had plenty of power to accelerate up slip roads etc even with 3 adults in the car.  Not sure about the 1.2tsi but I've driven a number of VAG cars recently (hire cars, jetta / toledo etc) with 1.6 Diesel and tbh I would say the 1.4 is the pick of the 3 mkIII cars you've listed for driving.

Of course I've no idea about economy etc.

We have a deal now on 1,4 TSI

A small price compasison:

MkII 1,8 TSI 160 2010 43000km is €16200

MkIII 1,4 TSI 140 2014 0km is €21400 (discount of €2500)

Thats a difference of €5200

Which one do you think is the best value?

The mkIII every time.

Brand new, better spec, 3 years warranty, 0 miles.

........but way more ££££££.

€5,200 isn't that much over the course of three years. Especially when Skoda are doing 0% PCP. Worth while IMHO for a brand new car

Maybe......

........But it's a lot more than €5200 in reality... As soon as you drive the brand new one off the forecourt you probably loose €3000 in depreciation. More like €8000 difference.

Not really, that's the point of PCP isn't it, you are really only paying for the depreciation, AFAIK you can't sell a PCP car on without paying it all off first so if you were to hand it back after month 1 it would cost you 1 payment, that's it.

You are also forgetting the 3 years free servicing and that the 2010 with 43k on the clock will most likely be out of warranty.

If you hadn't guessed, I'd go for the MK3 myself.

My father in law has had Octavia Mk1, Mk2 and Mk2 FL, so I was familiar with them all, but the Mk3 is the first one that I have ever wanted to own myself.

@Kabe - loved the photos of the 3 perfect supermodels in the boot

It's still depreciation, however you pay for it!

The OP will have to drive a few and decide. However there not being a 1.8 TSI option on the MkIII is a serious drawback if he wants to go for a petrol.

Are you sure an estate is big enough for a baby? Maybe some kind of people carrier or small bus would be better?

Ok, how about this: An Mk2 RS 200 -12 (40000km) is about the same price as a brand new Mk3 TSI140.

Opinions?

I presume this is the MkII 2.0 TSI vRS?.......Given those two options I'd go for the MkIII 140. 40000km is also a lot for a 2012 car.

I also beleive in this choice. We will test-drive the MkIII TSI140 tomorrow, be back with opinions!

That may be, but it's still nowhere near as drastic as you painted it. Don't forget, the MK2 will also be depreciating and in 3 years time the when the MK3 is worth €16k I'm pretty sure a 6 year old MK2 will struggle to break €10k.

Mk3 is probably the one to plump for, more money but undoubtedly better value.
