Clunky, crunchy and reluctant gearbox

Featured Replies

After a few weeks of wondering if I was going mad, my vRS's gearbox has been diagnosed as faulty and is due to be pulled out of the car, disassembled, given a stiff talking to and then reassembled.

Symptoms I've had are:

- Gears crunching occasionally

- Odd clunking sound when changing gear

- Occasional refusal to engage gear properly (especially when stationary), bringing your foot gently up on the clutch causes the gear to engage fully

Dunno what I do to them but I seem to be able to wreck gearboxes. Had the car from new in March and it's gone already. At least my old 53 plate Civic lasted a year before it needed a new box :D

i've had "issues" with mine on and off since i had it a year ago but its never ben enough to make me go and get it looked at.

think i might pay a visit to the dealers the next time i'm over that way.

I too have had problems with my gearbox, similar to RichDay. Took the car for its 20K mls variable service yesterday (a reasonable

Forgot all about this post :D

Well the gearbox got a new fifth gear and new synchros all round but it's still not feeling quite "right". I'll give it another couple of weeks and see if it improves but if not back it goes again!

Had the oil changed yesterday and it appears to have done the job. Although early days the gear changes all round seem to be smoother and I havent had any problems changing from 2nd to 3rd - which was the initial problem.

Mine's very reluctant going in and out of reverse - needs a real heave sometimes.

My superb does this when trying to engage 1st while stationary, do you think I should get Skoda to look at it when my car goes in on the 5th for a full warranty check over prior to the warranty expiring?

I thought it was just me as my Pug 406 did the same thing. it's not every time but occasionaly, oh and I seem to get the odd crunch from the box when changing up from 2nd to 3rd, could just be me being lazy with the clutch but it didn't do it before??

My VRS has the same problem, the local garage has told me that the clutch needs changing. This was done but no change in the problem(

Get it checked out - they're exactly the same symptoms as what I had and still have albeit to a lesser degree :(

My problems started with changes from 2nd to 3rd and not necessarily high revs either. The problem also was also experienced on occasion when selecting reverse.

The bulletin is apparently saved on thier computer system (desktop) under gear selection problems for the 02K gearbox.

Ask your dealership to take a look at their bulletins for you - my dealership were fine about it and let me do some research to try and help them get to the bottom of the problem. I finally got some info and relayed it back to them, they ordered the oil...........and the problem is now (hopefully fixed). Gave it a good kicking on the way home last night and way to work this morning and there aint any problems so far. In fact, gear changes do seem better all round.

When speaking to the mechanic at my dealership they mentioned that the only gearbox problems they had experienced in the past were on a Superb - think they mentioned that an oil change did the trick for that problem too - although cant be sure as I was more concerned about getting my car fixed.
