Excessive oil use

Featured Replies

Just put the second liter of oil in after 6000 miles, car on 56,000,

I bought the car at 36,000 and had it fully serviced at 40,000 from 40,000 to 50,000 the oil level only dropped half way down the stick mark, but now it seems to need a ltr every 3000, any ideas what could be wrong no leaks at all showing.

Could the seals on the turbo cause this as it tends to whistle from 1000 rpm??????????

I have been checking turbo prices on line and made enquiries and this is the reply I got, is this price reasonable

We can offer you a Turbo with a 2 year warranty , free delivery and exchange for £235 + vat

Too cheap you'll just buy a bodged repaired one Skippy,

My Passat ate oil and had a leak that I could never find the source of although that wasn't the reason for 1L each 2k, I think it was just going past the rings tbh, good thing is it won't be dying anytime soon bad news is the price of the oil, I had a way to bulk buy and off load some to cover the cost of what I needed but @ £15 PL it's no joke if you haven't got any other option, best one for you is to get some GSF oil @ £30 for 5L and use that otherwise you'll be paying a fiortune to Shell etc for some off the forecourt.

Just wonder if it could be the turbo oil seals that are gone, and letting the oil into the exhaust even though there is no sign of anything or exseive smoke come out of the tail pipe

How do I break this to you Skippy,

VW say 1L per 800 miles is in tollerence, it obviously isn't and it's their cop out excuse, the one thing I would get checked is the tandem fuel pump, it's on the side of the head above the gearbox, you won't see anything fixable but a self check is to open the fuel filter and empty it into a bottle and let it settle, if you see oil and fuel seperation that will be where it's going.

How does it get into there??? can you provide a more detailed explanation, and is it repairable if this is whats happening, The only things I can find on the web is the turbo oil seals perishing so the oil is burnt off, and if the tandem pump is faulty it increases the oil level

Yeah my bad I forgot the increasing oil level part of it, that's not owning a VAG anymore for you,

Only way with the turbo is to get it off and get it checked out but I suspect it isn't that on it's own, I know of lots of VAG owners who say their car uses oil, mine was imo horrendous and the last time I had a car like it it was a Ford Cortina M3 with ringwear,

What you need to do is to odds it up how much oil you think it will burn before you get rid of it vs how much the repair *that may not stop it* will cost,

I can assure you a £300 Turbo will be more problems than it's worth, I know it looks like good valve but you'll und up with an unbalanced unit that someone simply stripped and cleaned and re-sealed, not that some of the £700 ones are much better, even at GSF they are £850 for a re-con, if anyone would sell them cheap if possible it'd be GSF.

My Mech is going to have a look on Tuesday hopefully he will find the problem, he has said that they can be bad for the seals going, and he said he can fix the turbo if thats the problem far cheaper than a replacement he said he has stripped down loads and rebuilt them.

Best way Skip but if it doesn't sort it don't bend his ear as it could simply be going past the rings.
