windscreen chip repair or replace?

Featured Replies

They can sort that.

I was thinking it maybe to close to the black dots

If it it can covered by a pound coin, then it can be repaired.

Let them have a look at it and they will tell you but even the guys doing it can be cautious at times. When I had my wife's car done even the guy doing it wasn't too sure as the chip was borderline, but it was a case of if it works great, if not it's going to need replaced anyway and as the guy came to my house to do it it was no issue to me with giving the repair a try.

However the repair worked really well, you can still see a slight mark but nothing like what it was and there is nothing to feel on the outside now.

Doesn't look like it will be a problem to repair, but there's a gotcha I wasn't aware with windscreen repairs ...

If the repair is in the line of vision, there's a reasonable chance it will still be visible (possibly annoyingly so) to the driver once it has been repaired. Although their advertising may give a different impression, repair companies only promise a structural or mechanical fix is possible and that optical clarity isn't guaranteed.

When I queried this after my windscreen had been repaired I was told that for their own cars they'd never bother with a repair if the chip is in the driver's line of vision.

If the repair would be in the drivers direct line of sight then I didn't believe it could be repaired.

As others have said, just ask the repair guy if it is possible or not. If borderline then perhaps give it a go as if it works it will be a cheaper than the excess on your insurance to replace.

They just cover trim/gaps rather than serve any purpose

Replace without any doubt. Even if its repaired its a major week spot dispite what the screen companies say.

The Autoglass presentation says the following can be repaired: stone chips no bigger than a £2 coin and more than 3 cm from the edge, or if in the drivers line of vision, (which is defined as a vertical zone 30 cm wide centred on the middle of the steering wheel), then less than 10 mm diameter.

I expect they know the rules ...

Yep, I'm sure they do, hence why I said 'I didn't believe'' and to 'ask the repair guy'. More than happy to be put right though.
