Having done black wheels i'd go white everytime.

you lose the wheel definition with black and your tyres will always look brown

Glad you've said that - I've just got some new wheels for my car and although they're nice wheels, they're black and when I originally thought they would look good, they actually don't. Couldn't put my finger on the problem but now you mention it, its definitely the colour, especially since they're on a black car.  And like you say it makes the wheels look grey or brown.

indeed

i went to the trouble of tracking down a set of 16" spiders with their lovely intricate spoke design

and then sprayed them blackand lost all that detail

Thats why a nice anthracite/metallic grey is so nice on wheels. You get that dark look you are after while keeping the definition of the wheels, especially when the sun hits them and the metallic flake just pops.

pffft gold all the way ;)

Well obviously, its the colour of winners :D
