Car is amazing now - Goes like a rocket and coasts long distances improving fuel consumption

I got 16396 about 100 miles after a timing belt change two weeks ago.

Straight after the belt job I noticed the engine felt very stiiff but as the belts are very stiff I assumed it needed running in.

Anyway after the light came on I took the car in to my local repair garage who services the car and got

16396 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)

I was told the Camshaft sensor needed replacement.  So I asked him to order a new one from VW He then cleared the code so the engine light would go out.

He said "It will come back"

I decided to buy a

U281 OBD-2 CAN-BUS CODE SCANNER

from Amazon as my car is now 10 years old with 160,000 on the clock and i expect sensors to need replacement.

The U281 was fine for putting the engine light out  when it came on again

Yesterday the Camshaft sensor was replaced. The old one was date coded May5 2003 (The car is 53 plate)

The car is transformed.  The idle is smooth as.silk and the car flies now.  I cannot believe this improvement is just down to a camshaft position sensor but the car has never been so fast in its entire life. I am going to ask at the garage if anything else was done as whatever it is has made the car go better than at any time and i have had it from new.

Amazing.

Well pleased. It is also using less fuel. I averaged 29mpg today on a 8 mile run which usually returns about 23/24 mpg. this was largely because of the very free running after release of the pedal which meant less throttle and very little braking needed.

The U281 scanner seems to be really good.  .

Mine was crank sencer kept cutting out and givin epc light on the dash then wouldn't start at all sometimes crank sencer replaced normal again tf

Blast

After going really well for a week the wretched 16396 is back again.

Maybe its the timing belt tensioner. The car still idles and runs very sweetly so hard to see how the timingcbe out.

I have observed the new timing belt is a CONTITECH. Perhaps I better get it chaged again but this time for a Skoda or VW genuine part.

Perhaps the engine doesn't like the Contitech tensioner.

Is the EPC light the one with the outline of an engine as thats the one I get.

.

I'd be checking the cambelt timing myself.

Thanks for the advice - I am afraid to say the timing marks have been checked twice and are spot on.  I am not sure where to go with this now.

The engine light has just shown this fault after about 150 miles. I have cleared the code again buti would like to solve it

16396 I would associate with oil pressure, as the cars done a few miles it may be worth dropping the sump to look at the oil pick up pipe.

Good point FF :)

I will amend my statement to I'd check the camshaft timing.

Thanks for helpful suggestions which were spot on.

However the problems seems to be solved after 3 resets of the code.

I have now travelled 850 miles with no further reset. I think thats it  now

The technician advised that the timing belt, a Continental Brand, was very stiff when he orignally fitted it.

My guess is that after 1000 miles it has become a litttle less stiff which has allowed the tensioner to push in a fraction more moving the cam gear around a tiny amount to restore correct timing.

So I cleared the codes with a handheld device after 52 miles from new belt fitment, then 57 miles, then 63 miles and now we have 850 no more light.

So thats really good. fingers still crossed of course.

Fordfan was right.

A new oil pump solved it.

The fault code persisted after 1800 clean miles and eventually after an oil change the oil pressure went completely

Big STOP 2 miles out from garage

Towed it back and changed oil pump and hey presto 16396 is solved as the better oil pressure now tensions the cam to cam drive chain properly.

Now we have a 17536 - so inlet breathers, MAF etc next. Its an old engine so stuff is to be expected.

  • 1 month later...

Cleaned up an old MAF with electrical contact cleaner spray.

Swapped it over.

That seems to have solved the 17536.
