This will sound like taking the pee but have you switched it off and on?

I know it's a joke but it does fix things.

It's likely to be to do with permissions on the desktop folder. Your desktop is just a special folder.

If you can get to explorer look for your desktop in the C:\Users\[yourname] folder. Right click on it and check the user you are logged in as (passworded or not) has full rights to the folder.

If you still have problems create a new user and use that copying your stuff across.

Run an AV and malware scan too just in case. If your AV is out of date get a free one or buy one and use it.

It is never a good idea to save things to the desktop, as mentioned it is just a folder inside the "Windows" folder; the OS is constantly scanning this folder for changes, so the larger it gets, the more scanning is required and the slower your system gets.

Also, if you ever have a serious problem and have to do a system restore, you will lose everything store in the "Windows", "My Music", "My Documents", "My Videos" folders, etc

Cleaning out about 6GB of files saved in folders on the desktop of an elderly friends 13 year old PC took it from unusable to only vaguely arthritic.

I've just counted, and have 5, repeat five icons on my desktop and find this machine ok. One of my colleages has the same model PC, about 80, yes eighty icons on his, and is for ever bemoaning his slow startup!
