Just about to become a Fabia Owner... few questions.

Featured Replies

I'm picking up a 2nd Hand Fabia 3 1.9 tdi 105 on saturday.

Car has only done 17k and is just 4 years old and is in near immac condition.

It has had the cam belt/water pump changed (4years) and is being MOT'd/tax (6months) before collection. (paying £6800 striaght for it) from Walkers in Kings Lynn.

I had a Seat Ibiza PD 130 before this, so am well away of VAG and the derivatives.

There is 1 year left on the warranty.... so my question is this..

What sort of common faults should I look out for that may occur, so I can get them cured during the remaining warranty period.

Thanks in advance for anyone giving me a heads up :)

Dont think there ARE any common faults. niggles and occasional problems but overall, mostly the Fabia is a reliable car.

I think the Vrs versions drink oil like a Glaswegian necks scotch but my diesel barely sips it.

I have had problems but they were not really common. (Total engine failure, turbo failure, I put down to the car being over-filled with oil, from the factory).

The dpf can cause problems if not looked after but that would be the case with any brand TDI with a dpf.

Enjoy the car.

Does it have  a 5 year Warranty with Skoda that someone bought when the car was new,

or a 2 year extension that was bought when the car was 3 years old?

What is the wording of the Warranty, is it just major mechanical parts covered with the usual  exemptions?

So no cover for wear and tear items, that does not leave much that is covered on a 4 year old car,

engine, gearbox, but not clutch, so the big things only really.

Seems a good motor at a silly price for the mileage. Had a good run on test drive and nothing seemed amiss.

Thats good then....last of the pd 105's so no DPF :)

If you buy used of a skoda dealer and it is more than 3 years old with no extended warranty. You get a 1 year warranty off skoda uk as if you bought new

OK

Congrats on finding such a good car. The 1.9pd tdi is totally bullet proof, as long as the right oil is used and she is serviced on time. Just enjoy the car. There are no issues for you to worry about. I had the 1422cc pd tdi versions for 5 years from new and it was superb in every way and never missed a beat. Keep posting to let us know how you get on with it.

Oh...and Welcome to the site!

As it's 4 years old the main issue you would have had would be the Cam belt. As this has been changed, along with the all important water pump change at the same time you are sound.

Such a cracking engine and as reliable as they come.

Good luck and enjoy!

I thought we were discussing a Fabia?   :giggle:

Same engine and spec as mine. Most reliable and economical car I've ever owned and pulls superbly. Buy with confidence - the 1.9 PD is a great engine.

Thanks everyone for comments and nice welcome :)

My personal experience and my Dad's with the same engine, on new cars:

Two water pumps failed (mine) on the Superb Greenline 1.9 TDI.

One waterpump failed (Dad's) on the Fabia 3 TDI Estate.

So not completely bullet proof.

Worryingly on the Superb, it failed for the second time, went to the original dealer and they tried to claim it was brilliant of them to spot it.  Until I pointed out that it had failed 4 months earlier and they had replaced that one too, which was only noticed when it went in for new front tyres and the took the belly engine cover off and the accumulated fluid fell out...belts corroded.  All a bit worrying.  The fact it happened again and I noticed the same symptoms (losing coolant), so got it checked by the garage, plus my Dad's had failed, lead me to think there could be an issue.

I mention it, because although your pump has been changed at the required point, mine failed twice in a year (less than a year) on a 09 Superb in 2011/12.  Dad's was a 58 plate Fabia I think and went within the 3 year warranty.

Just keep an eye on the coolant level as it may be the first indicator.

Other than that, Fabias are great, the engine is good (no other problems on the Superb and Dad had none on the Fabia - apart from thinking the ride was a bit harsh) and the trim on the 3 is comprehensive.

I really enjoy driving mine. I have had a few hassles - although took out an extended Skoda warranty which has worked out well. Prior to the one running out when I bought the car it needed a shock absorber, front wheel bearing, and a throttle pedal. Since the extended I have had a cv joint and a couple of cv boots. I do quite a few miles and the welsh b roads probably don't help! :)

As mentioned spec level 3 is really nice, leather steering wheel, gear knob, handbrake. Climate control, cruise control and armrest as standard.

The 1.9TDi goes well, it does surprise people when they try and sit on your back bumper too! :giggle:

Plus rear parking sensors, front fog lights and nice-looking 16" atria alloys. At the time I was surprised at how many more standard features there were over the '2' spec.
