Glow Plug Control Unit/Relay

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me where I can find the glow plug control unit/relay?

I have been having some problems when cold starting my 2005 2.0 TDI PD Octy, all four glow plugs have been replaced also the harness under the camshaft cover. I'm still getting electrical faults on Cylinder 1, 3 and 4:

I would prefer to get this changed before I start investing in wiring looms.

Many thanks
Arthur

At 13.5°C the glowplugs are not required to assist starting.

Check fuse 51 in the eBox is OK.

This car has a glowplug timer/relay module. Below the eBox is a 6 position relay holder. The module is in position 2.

The module is about £60.

rwbaldwin - Thank you for the info  do you know if I need take the battery out etc?

I was going to buy a new engine wiring loom but I will hold off on this now. It's weird sometimes it fires straight away and on other mornings I have to spin it two to three times to get the engine going.

Do you know why it would throw the error perhaps if they are not required at this temp?

The module will do a self-test and will find what is an electrical fault. You will notice the glowplug light is on for a very short time when the weather is warm.

Have you cleared all of the faults?

Do they come back after the next start?

If you follow the glowplug wires back, they will come to a connector at the relay holder. Is that connection OK?

Thanks for you help again rwbaldwin it's appreciated

I have cleared all those codes yes and they come back again not instantly though I can only suspect there is a connection issue when cold starting take place perhaps and that is why it throws up the error. I haven't got VCDS so I can't check it myself in the mornings.

The car has been starting well lately even though we have had some chilly mornings.

I will follow the glow plug wires back to the module and check if this connector is looking ok.
