VW Polo R WRC, Autocar First Drive Review. (left hand drive.)

Featured Replies

Interesting and if I had a spare £200k (to buy the Polo and have some other money left), I might get one...and drive it right.  Mashing the throttle when you know it's going to be twitchy...good road tester then!

I thought that VW engine, a la Golf GTI Mk6, could go out to 230bhp in production trim (GTI anniversary 35?), so there's a chance of more ponies for a remap outlay.

BUT

LHD (not a huge issue) and £30k I haven't got, not coming to the UK officially, so no chance of picking one up used...

it cant put its power down because its wearing dunlop sport maxx tyres! ffs.

Love the tyre rage

Love the tyre rage

I honestly thought my car had serious problems when I bought my second vRS... to say it was on eibachs, and my first was on standard suspension, the fact that it handles terribly, couldn't put power down, was total understeer hell on every bend, I was quite upset! I honestly wanted my old car back! decided to give it until my first track day...... the tyres promptly melted like butter...

after readin the poor reviews I put my old wheels on with my maxxis Z1's that had been to europe, and done 4 laps of the ring, and also castle coombe, and looked like this afterwards...

all was well, and it "matched" my old car... added RARB, and it now far exceeds the capabilities of my old, car, and I was happy , and in love with my car again :P

I'm entitled to tyre rage! lol.....

I am shocked at the difference between the two.

But the difference when I changed out my fronts was immense. My guess is my Vredestein's won't match those Maxiss on out and out dry grip, but I do find they do an admirable job. In the current wet weather though the Vred's are spectacular.

For next year's spring track day I think I will swap my Hankook's to the front and see if I can melt them and get a matching set of Vred's all round.
