LSD...worthy upgrade?

Featured Replies

Thinking about buying an LSD, due to finding inherent torque steer quite frustrating.

Current power is 200 bhp/300 lbs ft from my PD 160 engine.

Hoping to get the most out the LSD from road usage, exiting tight corners and the like.

Question is will an LSD really help curtail the annoying torque steer?

Also, I have heard the odd comment that an LSD is only worth buying if the car sees a lot of track time?

Thanks :)

I'm running about 230hp. For fast road use its not needed IMO, but if I had more power or did a lot more track driving it would be something the car would need.

I have a Quife LSD on a pd 130 with 200bhp /380ftlbs and find it gives more traction and reduces under steer and just simply gets the power down. I use to get wheel spin in 3rd gear in the wet when pushing hard but not now.

You have to have your wits about you with a LSD as it can be snatchy as it moves power to the wheel with the most grip so two hands on the steering wheel is a good practice.

I've been a passenger in a stage 2 mk1 Fabia vrs with an lsd and the way it put down power out of tight corners was amazing, would get one if I was running more power.

Have a drive of one with an LSD Joe (if you've not already) it may just change ya mind!

One of the best mods you can carry out to a powerful front wheel drive car. Check out wavetrac for LSD for your car

Anyone that says it isn't really needed for road or track is simply wrong. It makes the car so much quicker its unreal.

In fact I used to run a 165bhp Ibiza PD130 against a friends PD130 Fabia vRS with closer to 180bhp. Due to the extra weight in his (but very similar driving style / balls) neither of us could really make any ground on the other at any point.

I then fitted a A.T.B. diff. On the road the effects were as simple as the difference between a standard PD130 vs a remapped PD130. That clear cut. No matter what he did round a corner, bend, roundabout I would simply put on the power earlier, get the grip and go past without any problem.

It does require learning how to use it, on my Fabia vRS @ 200hp if the car begins to understeer I would never dream of planting my foot like I do in the Ibiza, which makes the Ibiza just plan crazy.

I would go as far to say that if you enjoy driving and really do plan on having the car for a decent amount of time. Get it done. I am glad I got it done when I only had 165bhp nevermind with the current 240bhp / 480lb.ft in the Ibiza.

Oh bugger that's another mod I need then!

Me too Joe, it's on my list as well

I only use my car on the road and i would say i see the most benefit exiting roundabouts. As previously mentioned, it just wraps round the corner and pulls you through.

I cant say ive noticed any straight line difference tho.

Expensive bit of kit, but worth it if you want a good all rounder.

Jesus christ 480ft/lbs!?!!! What's the spec?!

They are a bit cheaper than I thought, but I guess VAT & fitting will bump that up towards £1k.

Does anyone know what the differences are between the different brands of LSD for the Fabia vRS? ... Wavetrack, Peloquin, Quaife

Are they complicated to fit?

I don't know anything at all about them but I read on another vag forum that I am on that the wavetrack is better than the other brands, see here

Wavetrac claim to be different to the others. I'm not sure you would notice this if you were comparing the three. I however have a wavetrac and it's simply awesome. Also has a lifetime warranty.

Blame nitrous and that's on a small nozzle too :(

Ideally need a gearbox specialist to fit it Joe. It's About £500 or so

And the APR bolts. It's not a cheap mod but it is well worth it.

Me and a friend both had until recently very closely matched Fabias (both hybrid 150s) except his had a diff. Trying to follow him out of corners you could literally see the couple of car lengths it pulls over a stock diff. Once out the corner we would be neck and neck down the straights more or less, then next corner he would pull a few more lengths. Huge grin factor when I drove it, just being pulled out the corner without fuss.

Due to the extra weight in his.

I was about to call you on this and call bull****, but I decided to check it 1st and was surprised to find a 100KG difference!

Having owned Cupra TDi at the same time as the vRS I can see where, never mind the extra doors, everything inside felt poo!

I am glad you did check 1st :) I dont lie :P

It might have also helped to mention (my bad) that mine was stripped out on top of this weight a little more than his.

I try not to make a ****er of myself where ever possible; sometimes it cannot be helped however! haha!

Normally its me so I don't mind a change :D

240bhp / 480lb.ft in the Ibiza.

Is it 480 lbs/ft or 480 n/m which is about 355 lbs/ft?

No it's ft lbs

^^^ that.

Sorry :(
