Mooing Brakes - Caliper Re-Con

Featured Replies

Found this in one of the sticky threads (thanks chicken_eyebrow):

"Mooing brakes - Rear brakes make a loud groaning noise when reversing and braking. This was a known issue by Skoda who brought out chamfered edged pads to fix it but some members have found only re-conditioning the calipers has solved the problem for them."

My brakes where fine until the begging of the year when I had discs and pads replaced all round. The guy that done it, worked for a Skoda Dealership at the time and looked at it serveral times with no clues. I am 95% sure its just the rears though.

My questions are:

How many people have actually found that re-conning the calipers has worked?

How much did it cost for the re-con (all calipers?)

Is there any where in essex that is recommended? Colchester Area?

This and a door latch switch issue is the only things wrong with my Octty, I love it to bits and want to get a second one for my wife (Me really) or a Fabia vRS

Many Thanks Guys

In my experience with Mooing can be a number of things contributing and sometimes all of them

1. Brake cable drag due to poor mechanism

2. Brake cable drag due to pinched cable or restriction

3. pads (certain makes are worse)

4. Caliper seized

5. One or more of the above

One of the main reason for mooing is poor or lazy handbrake cable return mechanism. It allows brake dragging.

That can be fixed by just replacing cables

The brake dragging can have a resonance of sound that is amplified through the rear beam making the noise even louder.

Skoda knew about this and designed a resonance reduction kit which is basically a Balance weight added to the handbrake cable bracket

This a pic before Balance weight being fitted

The difference between the old and new

Now with Balance weight fitted

This i enough to stop most cases but not all including mine.

I also fitted rear cable return springs to also force hand brake cable to go all the way back to the off position on caliper bracket.

I also fitted new rear cables.

Thanks Bowders1,

Looks like I'm going to have a search round new cables then. Where did you get the reduction kits from? And did they cost much?

cables are a dealer item or TPS not that expensive and i would go for this first as i fixed my friends VRS with just cable change.

Then I would go for rear handbrake bracket helper springs at around £7 each or less.

The anti mooning kit (dampers) are around £110 so not cheap , again from main dealer or TPS only

I can supply part numbers of all if needed

Thanks again Bowers1.

If you have part numbers, that would be fantastic. Save me sometime, have MOT in couple weeks

If it helps.

On my Octavia I have had for 4 years and 60,000 miles

I have stripped and re-built both rear calipers, due to stiction and handbrake seizing issues.

I have replaced the handbrake cables and adjusted the slack a few times prior to MOT's.

I have recently had to replace one of the rear calipers due to a bleed nipple shearing off.

I have had a variety of different discs and pads over the years, some pads with chamfers, some without - and I have also tried my own chamfering too.

I have re-assembled calipers with differing amounts of Copper Grease behind the pads and on the sliders.

And...no matter what, over these 4 years, I have always had Mooing rear brakes almost constantly. They're especially bad in the mornings following a damp / wet night when the discs have moisture on them.

Basically, it is 'a feature of the model, Sir.'

And there's not much to be done about it. I know people who have fitted the £100 official modification, to no avail.

So, think about doing what I have done - ignore the issue, live with it, be happy that it only happens in reverse - and chill.

In fact, for a long time now, when I get in my car on an early morning, all grumpy and tired, and I reverse in my road to go to work - the Mooing sometimes actually cracks a smile on my bad-tempered face, and I drive off shaking my head and grinning at my silly car. Give it a go! :)

Seriously there is no way I could and would live with it.

It is true there are certain members plagued with it no matter what has been done.

I fixed mine also just fixed my friends VRS.

I used the return springs from a Sharan(I think)

Only moo's after really heavy rain or when I have washed the car now.

Mine wines like a beeretch

Whats part numbers for that anti moo kit

Drives me insane

Hi there

Ok part numbers are:

Rear Brake Balance kit.

1J0698998 for the Skoda Octavia or

6X0698998 for the Vw Lupo P/N which is identical

This is the pic of one on the right

Rear Caliper return springs that can sometimes work as a very cheap alternative to the above. Click on the part number to go straight to Ebay link of the item.

My ebay links wont work :(

Are there not return springs on them then :(

No buddy there is no return springs on the rear caliper or bracket. The cable is the only part that returns the hand brake  back to home position. Poor design, as when cable stretches or becomes stiff even when you release hand brake the return arm on caliper is sometimes not fully returned to home position (touching bracket stop) which is what causes dragging of piston and that god dam mooing.

It is not always the cause of the mooing though just to make life difficult for us.

  • 2 years later...

Just got a 2009 VRS... and I have mooing brakes...  Had a look and spring has already been added so I looked for the weights.
