Breakdown cover

Featured Replies

Got a rare longer distance trip to Newcastle airport coming up.

I've no breakdown cover on the car (haven't since warranty was up).

Feeling since we're going on holidays might be worth getting a roadside package.

Any recommnedations for companies or polcies.

In fairness internet implies they're pretty much all shoite.

Don't need home cover, bus is a last resort normally.

Need to buy tomorrow to be covered next week.

I have been with the AA since 1986 and i can't fault them, when i have had to call them out they came when they said or before.

I've had Britannia rescue for the last 10 years. Costs £88 for both cars and me and the wife in any car, also takes you wherever you want to go and pays a penalty if they aren't there within an hour.

I have been with the AA since I passed my test...

...needless to say I think they do a great job. They've never turned me down or charged me extra for my at times 'regular' use. Staff are always friendly and the waiting time is never too long either.

I have break-down cover tied-in with my car insurance.

Simply it's free until you use it and have a break-down, when a £20 charge will be payable on the spot, whether at home or away.

Up to 3 break-downs in a year limit.

So, if you don't use it you don't pay anything, and have the assurance you can get help if your stuck somewhere, ie: a motorway??

I'd endorse Britannia too. I only ever once waited more than 20 minutes and that was after making a call at 17:30 so the recovery operator had had to go back to the garage to collect a truck and then drive 15 minutes to reach me.

At the other extreme I was still on the phone reporting the breakdown when the operator walked in having just filled up a truck, and the call centre were flexible enough to let me pass the phone to him so I recorded that as "response time 0 minutes" when I got the feedback survey form.

I have joint RAC at home, roadside assistance and recovery via tesco club card. IIRC it cost £58 in vouchers for the year. Not much help for the OP I guess but it may be useful to others reading the thread

Anothe thumbs up for Britania Rescue!!

Quckest turn out was after a call by my wife in the days before mobile phones; they were at the car before she walked back to it. No more than 5 minutes!!

Green Insurance Company! £58 for a year's full cover including 90-days European cover. Obviously this is insurance so you pay up front and claim back. Not had to use it yet (touch wood)

RAC are very hit and miss - some guys are really helpful and nice, others bitch about you behind your back, misdiagnose and dont listen.

AA - pretty good

Green Flag - pretty good

Had a incident recently with my Blackline, I think no I'm sure it was my fault originally.I was trying to piggy back my dash cam to an existing fuse in the box, then changed my mind and decided to go with the cig lighter socket. I think I must have put the removed fuse back in the wrong slot- ie one over. Anyway did not use the car for a couple of weeks and forgot about it. Two weeks later load car up to go to Scotland ready to go,WONT START, cranking over fine mmmp fuel me thinks, full tank so call Skoda but it's late Friday and everybody is on there way home, so advised to call Skoda (assist aka RAC) The guy turned up some 50mins later. I explained problem and expressed the view it sounded like lack of fuel. He hooked up diagnostic under dash checked all functions and deemed the car OK nothing wrong. He then lifted back seat checked fuel pump it was dead. He then fed a separate live feed to the pump hay presto it works? I then remembered me messing about in the fuse box so I asked him to check that all the fuses were in the right places and working properly, this he did and declared them fine, he sighted all the paperwork to this effect. He then stated that he would have to tow the car to a Skoda dealer for further examination, as this was now weekend it was defered to the following Monday(my request) Simpsons on examining the car emediately found a fuse missing for the fuel pump, and on examining the RAC paperwork they could not believe they had missed such a simple thing. They did however say a similar thing had happened the day before with a brand new badly misfiring Citigo towed in of the motorway the old lady owner had been waiting over an hour, all it was, was a plug lead had worked loose, and again it had been missed. My view on this apart from me being a plonker, is that there are probably some very good knowlegable operatives that work for all the different services, but there are also some useless ones as well who rely to much on modern computer related diagnosis, but without the old school common sense approach first. I think this scenario will only get worse as cars become more complicated. It will be a simple recovery service.

Cheers chaps.

Just bought with Greenflag.

A quote for basic cover via quidco came out at £21.

Nearly went with AA but they were dearer, insisted on holding my payment details for renewal and tried to sell me car insurance and house insurance before I even got to buy. Put me off somewhat.

Just had to bin AA after 4 years.

Renewal letter came through and they wanted £160...again, same as last year but they drastically lowered the price to £65 when I threatened to leave.

They rang me today as I haven't responded to their usual letter, but there was no budging on price this time unfortunately.

Sad really, as even though I've only had reason to use them once, they were very helpful and efficient.
