Mods on PCP car

Featured Replies

Lot's of people taking up pcp's here. Just a thought. Would anyone consider modding a car that they technically don't own? Personally I would not dream of doing something as mental as mapping, but might consider some minor cosmetics. First being getting the wheels out a bit More with hub centrics. I still cannot for the life of me figure out why Skoda don't put a bigger offset on alloys fitted to the vRS. Audi do it on ALL their models. which gives their cars a nice squat stance. Looking at the rear quarter of all incarnations of the vRS and seeing the rear wheels sitting to far inboard spoils the look and lessens the sporting image of the car. Thoughts on this??

When I ordered mine I asked the salesman, and he said (unoffically) you can, it will just affect the warranty if something goes wrong.  He said he's had a couple of PCP cars come back that have been remapped.  Got me thinking!!

I was told by the sales manager of my previous car that the is yours to do what you want with it, see it as another way of finance. However, don't do anything silly like a booming exhaust and stupid stripes, the car needs to be subtle and worth something when coming to part exing the car or handing back to the finance company (which apparently never happens as the dealer normally buys the car from everyone).

So basically maybe a little lowering be fine, window tinting will be, just dont go vinly wrapping half the bonnet and paint wheels blue.

My mk2 octavia had wheels power coated black (was an optional extra but my old car was already built, rear windows tinted and headlight light smoke film) and i have not had an issue trading it in.

same with mine as I had my wheels powder coated to anthracite.  again no problems come trade in and they were pleased they werent silver :)

not sure what would happen if you wanted to give the keys back but then i doubt anybody does this?

My Mk6 Golf GTD is remapped to 210bhp, it's a PCP and I am trading it in for the Octavia vRS Petrol... no issues trading in at dealer (they know about remap). I plan on remapping the vRS when one is available.

I will add items (retrofit) to the car and maybe some 19" wheels for the summer.

They will only be genuine parts in the case of the 230v inverter and any other retrofit possibility as they become available.

I'm seeing if I can add the inverter as an option as my build is already delayed by front assist.

Some mods will just affect the trade-in value affecting equity/negative equity situation. Same as handing back to VWFS, they assess the vehicle and may depending on condition request further payment on account of changes made to the vehicle. Id suggest in most cases the cars are auctioned to recoup any potential losses on the loan so probably doesnt really matter either way.

I do find it funny when people suggest a PCP car is never really your own, it can be if you so choose to fund the bit at the end that wasnt financed. You are the registered keeper of the vehicle and it is your property much the same as a car bought via traditional HP, with both schemes the finance company can still take the car if you default on payment;its just the same as a mortgage.

When we signed our vwfs agreement there's a section about needing authorisation from them to alter the car from supplied spec?

Anything minor I think you'd be fine though. I'm looking at retro fitting fogs to our car

The terms and conditions clearly state otherwise. Until paid in full, the car remains the property of vwfs.

It only matters if you hand the car back to VWFS as stated above, this apparently never happens so as long as you've gave them realistic milage figures and your in equity then no worries as the dealer will purchase the car from you and pay the remainder of the finance off

Yeah like my house is technically the property of Santander until i finish paying off the mortgage, have the title deeds and still consider it my own.

I am the registered keeper of the car and have the V5 document; so long as VWFS keep getting paid I can do what i like to the car more or less.

Registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. It just gives the name and address of the person responsible for the car so DVLA know who is accountable.

Just mod it sensibly if your going to do it and have no issues and be different to everyone on here who wants to be same

absolutely Tim but everyone must acknowledge that nothings really entirely your own unless its bought entirely with cash, PCP, HP, cash loan whatever.

very few people buy cars cash nowadays as the squeezed middle classes typically just dont have the cash, just trying to make the point that PCPing a car is very little different to any other finance option really just works a bit differently thats all. If you make the balloon payment, much the same as completing the HP term the car is yours....unless of course youve borrowed more money to finance the balloon haha

Correct. The whingeing proletariat!! Roll on the revolution!!!

I recall some years ago someone had a starting issue with a Seat that was modified and financed through VWFS.  The outcome was that VWFS terminated the finance agreement and demanded that the modifications be removed at the keepers expense and the vehicle returned to them as a standard vehicle.  It's not your car, you're just paying to rent it with an option to buy it at the end of the finance period.
