Water pump belt removal

Featured Replies

I have tried searching the forums but can not find any detailed information.

does anyone know how to remove the belt (pictures appreciated), on a 1.3 engine. i don't need to take it off completely, just enough to be able to start the engine to find out if my pump is faulty or not.

if the pump is faulty i will then be looking for instruction on how to change the pump.

Is your belt tensioned with a automatic tensioner, or by the mounting on the generator?

Is your belt tensioned with a automatic tensioner, or by the mounting on the generator?

Good question

It would be easy to say, from a photo of the engine, showing the generator mount.

If you have the automatic tensioner, prepare yourself to cry a lot of bitter tears! :)

If your car is fitted with power steering and/or A/C, there is a tensioning pulley that you need to push downwards its axle using an open socket. Otherwise you need to slacken the bottom mounting bolt of the alternator (17 mm socket) and the upper sliding mounting bolt (13 mm) and rotate alternator to slacken the belt. Before doing anything mark the direction of rotation of the belt and assess the tension by pushing the belt with your thumb.
