I have an issue with streaming bluetooth music from my phone and making calls, basically whilst listening to spotify etc via bluetooth all is well but when you make or receive a call the switch causes issues such as not being able to hear the person on the other end, is this something others have come accross?

Have you turned the volume up on the stereo?

Yes its not a volume issue and works fine if I don't stream music and use an aux cable instead

Is it a Galaxy S3 lol ?
