Check Brake Pads

Featured Replies

So after you guys helped me out some weeks ago, i have finally managed to change the Brakes and disks on my OCTY VRS Estate

however the "Check Brake Pads" warning light is still on.

Theres only one sensor on all 4 of the pads, so do you guys think that is is.  how do i diagnose it.  Dont have VAG Com.

If it is the sensor can i just get a part to replace the sensor?

cheers

Lee

I do believe the fault needs clearing off the ecu via vcds to extingish the fault light.

Matt

A check brake pad warning is nothing to do with any diagnostics. Its a warning not a fault. The new pads come with a new sensor. If the warning light is still on then the connector is either adrift or it has been broken. The loom section is available for an OE repair.

We did take care of the wire when re instatalling the pads, and they were fine with about 5 mm left on.  The warning light was on before we changed the pads and disks.

Do you know what a new loom consists of.  Is it just a wire with plugs at both ends or will i need to dismantle the plug and put a new one on?

Cheers

It depends on what is wrong with it. you can get repair wires to crimp in if that is the issue.

the sensor is on the pad itself, mine came on and after change it did not need to be reseted with vagcom.

Are you sure the plug is hocked up properly.

Yes the plug is in solid.  i am suspecting that its the connector plug.

What do you think a dealer might charge to do this?

The sensor is normally closed and goes open when the pads wear down. Some non oem pads come without a sensor connection and the recommendation is to short the wires in the car side plug together to fool the car into thinking the pads are fine.  You could do this to check if the plug and harness are ok - if the light stays on then you will need to check the harness/plug with a multimeter to see where the open circuit is.

As mentioned above if it is just a loose or broken wire at the connector end a simple solder or crimp job will fix it.

Looks like its not the plug.  Crossed the terminals and the warning lights still on.  I dont have the expertise to pull the wiring out to check the loom, so any guesses on a dealer change out of the loom?

may i ask what brandname are the pads, are they really compatible?

Hi,

I got EBC Redstuff pads in it.  But the light was on before i changed anything and the pads i took out still had quite a lot on them.  I changed them because the disks needed doing.

What a dealer would charge is an open ended question, depends whats wrong and what they charge an hour.

I'd book it in for an hours diagnosis (circa £100) and go from there if you don't have a good local indie.

To eliminate the possibility of an o/c pad sensor (or wire), short the pins at the plug. If the light goes out, then it's a bad pad.
