Looking to do the RING next year

If you intend to really give it the beans round the ring is advise some good upgraded pads and decent discs, I.e Ferodo DS2500 pads. Other than that looks like a good setup, maybe chuck an anti roll bar on the back if you have money spare

Most importantly, a good set of tyres !

Pads, Ferodo 2500 or 3000 pads, standard pads will let you down, also tyres, a fairly cheap upgrade for a massive improvement.

 I fitted Federal 595 RS-R to my Golf and it was a massive improvement.

 

 

 I was speaking with Mr Rooney today, he has done the ring a lot of times and would recommend using a hire car company that specialises in cars for the ring, you will be insured whilst on the track and you will also be insured if you have a collision with a biker or similar. At the ring, you pay for the damage you cause if you hit a car, a bike or the barriers (not saying you will but you never know)

better than paying for a repair GT 2 you might run into, or paying for metres of barrier that might need replacing not to mention if you hit a motorbike and the rider has life changing injuries, it will cost a lot more than €2500 to pay his settlement.

I am not saying don't do it, I am saying make sure your ass is covered as there is no mercy if you get it wrong, Mr Rooney knows a guy paying €100,000 claim for hitting a Porsche that was stationary after it had hit the barrier, fault was placed on the car hitting the stationary vehicle!!

Me and a friend recently returned from 'the ring'.

We took his car which had a stage 1 map, recent(ish) clutch and dmf, egr delete, vogtland suspension kit and 312's. We ran the standard wheels on Toyo T1R's. So budgets in my eyes. Your car seems to have a more than adequate spec, however we both agreed a rear anti roll bar would have been nice to try and reduce some understeer. 

The brakes had standard pagid pads and disks with updated fluid. They were MORE than adequate. Not once did they fade and both of us pushed hard. We completed around 4 laps each day and they were fine. We would go out and do a lap then come in,  drive round for ~10 mins or so and let the car cool. We would then give it an hour before the next one.

If your coilovers are wound down low I would suggest winding them up so the drop is circa 40mm. The elevations are quite viscous and coming off sections like the carousel the floor of car is likely to be very close to the ground. The last thing you want to do is smash the sump. Not just because you'll probably total your engine/turbo but if a car comes off and they close the track your looking at £££££.

What I would ensure is that your clutch and flywheel is in good condition. Your constantly downshifting at speed and engine braking, so it does take a bit of a hammering.

In my opinion do not be put off by all the scaremongering. We consider ourselves reasonably capable drivers and stuck within our competencies no matter how tempting it was to push for times. We did time the laps but never showed each other until we had finished for the day.

We both managed around 10:15 BTG with traffic.

The drivers on there have very good etiquette. Keep your eyes on your mirrors and if something is flying up behind keep right and let it past. The Porsches, M3's and Artego's come at a right rate of knots and will still go for the apex even if it means they pass your car by about 3" but you become aware of that.

It is a great experience and really isn't expensive. Think like what has been mentioned above happen, but you take that chance. I wouldn't hesitate to go again personally.

Jim that for that mate great info on how you found it and pagid disc and pads seem to be ok then. I was going to go down the braided hoes route so even if they do hot they won't faded as much. My coilover aren't that low so I should be ok and I had a new clutch and dual mass about 20k ok so should be all good.

If you can afford DS2500/DS3000 pads go for them as they will be a good upgrade. I believe Touristenfahrten closes soon (or may have closed for the year?) so you've got ages to get some. But definitely get decent racing brake fluid. Motul RBF600 or similar. I think braided lines are more for pedal feel than anything but for the price why not?

We will probably be going again within the next 12 months but with something vtec and a more capable chassis :)
