Traction Control

Featured Replies

The other day I was happily driving along with traction control ASR switched off. Drove over a bump and the traction control light flashed up for a spilt second and went. The wheels may have been off the ground while this happened.

Does the asr kick in automatically when the wheels lose grip?

i wasnt aware it could turn back on? unless the switch is loose... ?

how come you were airborn?

Dunno about whether in automatically kicks in, but I've noticed the light flashing when I've taken a bump really fast ! :)

so have i greg but not when switched off?

The ASR light should stay on permanently when it's switched off. Is is flashing from a "light on" state?

Like freakcrab mentions, when you switch the ASR off the light stays on permenantly.. If the ASR is switched on the light stays off until the ASR actually does some work when it flashes up..

Let me get this right.

When the light is on, traction control is on

When the light is off, traction control is off

Is that correct or is it completely the other way round and i have been driving for the last 2 months with it turned on?

I was airborne due to a small crest on the road, more of a bump actually.

Oooops didnt see rally marshalls post. Which answers my question i have got it completely the wrong way round. When i drove the traction control ASR would have been swtiched on ie no light, when i took off then it flashed! Ah.

didnt your car come with a manual?:D

all asr/esp/tc systems tend to follow the same rule... light on means system off... light flashing means system "working hard"

The ASR defaults to "on" so you need to switch it off everytime you start the car.

Unless you now want it on.

Sound like it's been pretty unobtrusive in the last couple of months.

Personally, I wish my car had ASR. I'd leave it on 99% of the time. At least that way it's saving some wear and tear on your tyres. The times you want it off are few and far between and not everyday driving conditions IMHO.

Day tripper

This sudden power cut in a dip has happened once with my car in 10k. It was in second gear accelerating hard (5000+rpm) when it 'sunk' into sudden, sharp dip. The acceleration was literally wiped out and felt as though the control brain just lost the plot for a second. Oh - its a 4x4 as well !

Never happened since.

Fabpreza - yeah, the ESP has sensors for yaw angle but no concept of up \ down. I have found a fast sudden downhill confuses it and it kills power, flashing madly.

Especially if there was a moment of "lightness" before the car headed down the hill.

I get this quite often, but then that could be down to my, ahem, driving style ;)

no Ian thats the wing mirror to road surface proximity sensor....:p

Ah, so when it exceeds 2metres it cuts the power, knowing the wheels cannot possibly be on the road?

Cool!!! :p

I noticed tonight whilst racing an impreza when i changed gear from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd it was wheelspinning with the traction control turned on. Would this have reduced the revs when traction was lost?

Does anyone else find wheel spinning when quickly changing gear or am i pulling up the clutch too quick?

Also does the vrs have LSD?

u sure the wheels are spinnig or is it just the revs rising as the std clutch slips......?

No, but it does have EDL (along with ABS and ASR).

Im sure the wheels are spinning but I think that is down to me by pulling up the clutch to quick rather than outright power to the wheels. I take it you dont find this?

DGW-does the audi s3 have the same or does it have lsd?

Usually can slip my front wheels when changing up and not moving my right foot. That said, I don't have any traction control, but then nor do I have a huge amount of power. Maybe speak to your dealer, if they say it's normal and that it's the first time they've heard of anything like it, get your traction control checked out... :)
