rear washer not spraying 2001 vrs

Featured Replies

Hi all, im having a little issue with my rear washer.the wiper works fine albeit a little slowly but I get no water spray at all I've sprayed and sprayed to see if its leaking anywhere,( like my audi a3 used to pop the pipe in the engine bay.) But no leaks anywhere, not inside nor outside. :/ grrrrrr... And also front washer jets seem a tad naff. Passenger side sprays mainly at the bonnet lip and drivers just sprays a light mist. Can they be adjusted or replaced??? Many thanks chaps.

I unclipped the cover of the rear wiper arm at the base and exposed the internals. May little pipes and conectors. There is one tiny articulated connector. All the little bits can be removed by gently prying out and cleaned out with a a piece of very fine wire under a tap with soapy water. Mine was full of rusty guck.

Dont drop the little connector part down the plug hole. When you can blow through it it is clear to go back.

Very fiddly and takes a while but worth it as no garage will do this sort of thing

While doing this it is a good idea to replace the self tapping screws holding the number plate lamp lenses in place as the middles of the pozidrive recesses rot out making them very difficult to remove. Replace with stainless self tapping screws.

Too late to replace the screws they have already rotted I've noticed. But i will have a look at what you have suggested and see if that works. Many thanks

Check the pipe in the boot, left hand side, there's a joint that often comes undone

I've checked that pipe and its ok. Im thinking the pipe from the screen wash tank is blocked. Cos there is no water at all in the pipe. Is it an easy job does anyone know.

As you have signs of problems at the front as well, I would look at the bottle and its plumbing. In particular, is the bottle full? The bottles can crack and leak and the seal to the pump can fail.

Putting your two symptoms together, it is exactly what happens when the water bottle starts to run out.

Water bottle is full and shows no signs of leaking. Are there seperate pipes for front and rear from the water bottle? Or does it come out in 1 then split?

I've had a similar problem with my 2004 vRS - it's incredibly common due to several design flaws which are common to all VW group stuff from back then (hopefully they've improved it now).  There are several connections in the washer pipe to the rear and one of the connections on mine had come undone, leaving a puddle of water under the CD changer (where it proceeded to short circuit the wires for the boot latch and boot light).  My rear wiper was also slow and eventually stopped altogether.  This happens because the washer fluid runs through the middle of the rear wiper motor, eventually making it short out or something.

The garage I go to sorted the wiring that had corroded, replaced the rear wiper motor (I bought a new one on eBay from a Skoda dealer for seventy quid, don't bother with one from a scrapper as they'll be knackered), cleaned out the nozzles and put a clamp on the joint in the washer pipe that had come loose.  Cost about £50 labour including the wiring if I remember rightly.  The motor apparently is a fairly easy swap, I just couldn't be bothered!
