Tread depth mark on tyres

Featured Replies

Just wondering how close to illegal my tyre are.

What depth is the depth marking running in the middle of the tyre ?

When the tyres reach the mark are then illegal or do they have to be a certain amount above it ?

Just wondering as I heard that we have a 1.6mm depth here whereas elsewhere they run to 3mm. So it got me wondering what the marker in the middle of the tyres actually is valued at.

1.6 is the minimum legal tread (iirc over the centre 75% of tread).

There are usually small wear indicators (highlighted by a triangle on the side wall) once the tread level has reached them its time to change.

Looks like the marker is 1.6mm see here and the tyres are shot when the thread reaches it. Mine are Pirelli, but I'm sure its the same regardless.

Thats what I assumed until I thought different countries were using 3mm depth (and reakoned the depth marker was 3mm)

Do you have Pirelli Dragos?

No P6000's, why ?

the mark between the tread is at 1.6mmm if its smooth they are illegal. (a previous poster was right in saying this applies only to the centre 75% of the tread...)

 Do you mean that if they were underinflated it would be the outside edge which would be illegal ?

Not the centre part, it must be 1.6mm or more over 75% of the tread.

Different countries do have different rules eg Germany is 3mm (IIRC) which is why tyres manufactured in Germany start to have dodgy grip at that level ie Continental.

Do the likes of Germany still have tyres with a 1.6mm mark in the middle or do they have 3mm ?

Nope they have 1.6mm as the tyres are made for a global market.

Do you have 3 pin or 2 pin plugs in Eire?
