Faulty Sensor in the Fuel Tank..?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have a weird problem with my Fabia...It's a 1.9 Remapped to 140bhp TDI

I have put full tank of fuel into my car yesterday (Shell V Power), got home. Today morning when i turned the key in the ignition the fule level on the dash went from top right to the bottom showing that I'm running on reverve and need re fuel. I knew the tank is full so ignored this and drove cat to work. I have noticed while driving that fule level on the dash is increasing nd by the time i got to work is was full again...Not really sure what the level is going to be when I finish work. I have no idea why this is happening. The only thing I can think of is that few days ago I was running on reserve and had to put some fuel in the car but there was no V Power on the station so had to put normal Diesel in the car. I've been using the V Power since day one of owing the car but I don't think using a normal Diesel in my car could couse above.

Any ideas guys...? I really don't if this is serious and sholud be looked at...?

Many thanks in advance...!!! Matty

Float arm stuck? Or was...

Forgot to mention it happened three times since I put the cheap diesel in the car. I thought putting the full tank of fuel will sort this out but it didn't me thinks.

Cheap or high bio content fuel?  You might have a "growth" in your tank; a sort of sludgy-algae..

Should I be worried or leave it and it will sort itself out...?

If its what I've heard reports of, it will only keep growing.  Ideally, you need to pull the pump etc out and have a look - and be prepared for a replacement tank if its bad.

IF (and it's a guessing if, don't forget) there's a sludge there, it could (and this is only a theory) have stuck itself to the sender float when the tank gets low/empty, and then washes off as you drive around.

I've just re-read your initial post several times again - I assume it was reading full after you filled it yesterday?  If so, that dramatically decreases the chance of it being the funny growth!

Yes. It was full but only for few seconds. When I got to the car the tank went from full to around two digits fro reserve. As the car warmed up I went back to full and stayed on. I was worried about this happening again when finished work but when I got to the car the tank was showing as full and stayed like it until I got home so everything seemed fine...I guess I'll have to wait until the morning and see what happens. What really bothers me is this only happens when car is cold.

It's probally a faulty fuel sender unit in the tank.

Fuel sender most likely faulty. Get it checked. It's easy. Could be the dash guage too.

Were you parked on a hill?

Were you parked on a hill?

Nope...I think this had nithing to do with the parking on the hill. I think it's the fuel sensor...but will need to get it checked.

Started the car today and it looks like everything is fine...Fingers Crossed same happens tomorrow

You have the digital gauge on the dash yes? They have been known to give issues in the past.

Yes. The digital one. The second day in a row and it seems fine so I hope this is ok and sorted itself out. Touch wood...:)
