VRS questions

Featured Replies

Hi,

Im new to the forum having recently bought a fabia vrs tsi. The car is fantasic and happy with my buy. However i have a couple of questions.

1. The kick down function seems agressive. I ve only used this function a a few instances, but will this damage the engine as it takes the revs just before the redline.

2. The brake makes a funny hollow sound when manouvering a low speeds.

3. Last of all when the car is started from cold i can hear a strange sort of knocking noise intermittanly. If i drive it round the block and get a little temp into it, its sweet ad a nut.

I would appreciate if anyone can help with these questions.

Cheers

Further to my second question its the brake pedal that feels/makes a hollow type sound.

Funny you mention this, I've noticed my brake pedal has a slight creak / mechanical "give" to it sometimes. It all seems tight and secure though.

The kickdown is aggressive, similar to Sport mode on the DSG. I just make sure I accelerate hard but don't hit the kickdown switch if I don't want it to go crazy.

The knocking noise could be anything... if it goes away once up to temp I'd be inclined to ignore it unless it is really significant.

Thanks

Thats spot on with the brake pedal so it must be a vrs thing.

Yeah i need to get used to accelerating maybe just pressing 3/4 throttle will stop the agressive kick down.

The noise its only slight i i noticed it by chance whe doing tyre pressures. In the car when cold you cant hear anything. Its something to forget about.

Enjoy your car.

You will not break the engine or the gearbox using the Kick down, or manually shifting down.

Just get used to where it is, when it might function and traction of your tyres and possible Torque Steer.

The engine does rev and pick up its heals, or you can shift quicker, or many variations, of using, 'D', 'S', Manual shifts on stick or paddles.

(sometimes i manually shift down and then kick down, or do a Double Kickdown. dropping 3 gears if allready in 'D7'.)

& in 'D' the 7 speed box easily and quite often will drop 2 gears when you kick down.

You have different things happening at different RPMs, but above 3,500 rpm it is just Turbo and taking it to the Red line when the engine is warmed up will do no harm.

Cheers i think ive just got to get used to the car. I making sure the oil is upto temp before it gets any kind of hammer. Even though the hand book says its upto temp when the water gauge is upto temp.....that cant be right as the oil temp doesnt register then.

The water temp can be showing @ 90*oC in a couple of miles after stating off, a few more on cold winter days maybe.

It might be 5 miles or more before the Oil displays 50*oC.

& 15-20 miles before it 'shows' 88-92*oC

The "kickdown" section of the throttle can be felt as an increase in resistance for the last few % of travel - practice will mean you don't hit it when burying the throttle as it even works in "Manual" mode.  At the point just before the kickdown you are actually at 100% throttle anyway so despite your gut reaction, you won't get any more throttle, just the kickdown.

You get a funny feeling through the brake pedal for the first few applications as its still cleaning the rust of the discs (especially the rears - can take even longer).  The discs do seem to go brown overnight, especially if its been raining.

They can sound a bit "slappy" when cold if thats what you mean - either that or its the little bit of backlash in the gearbox or it constantly changing the "off duty" gearset trying to anticipate if you're going to be going up or down the box next which you can sometimes hear, especially when cold I find.  As it warms up, the clearances disappear.  Nothing to worry about IMHO, although I've not heard yours (and not heard mine for 3 weeks, but that's because it's still awaiting accident repairs).

After what you have said it defo sounds like the gearbox trying to do its thing....so not to worry.

Hope you get your car back soon 3 weeks sounds a long time.

3 weeks and it's still not in the right country, let alone being repaired ;)  Luckily things are moving forward now as it's being repatriated this week - finally.
