Winter Tyres. Best Option and Where From

Featured Replies

Hi,

Got some good advice on another thread and have bought 4 x 16 inch authentic alloys. Now for the tyre.

Budget is around £80 a tyre, if I can keep to that happy, less even happier. I have read so many threads here on this topic and its bizarre that there does not seem to be one preference? Are the Avons on Camskill any good, also interested in mileage expected, had ATR's on a previous car and was getting 40k+ miles.

Optiosn to buy from look like http://www.camskill.co.uk or abroad from http://www.reifen.com/en ?

Type of trye I need is  205/55 R 16 94V-XL

Thoughts welcome

Have a look on www.mytyres.co.uk

Skoda tyre choice permits you to run winter tyres at a lower speed rating that the standard, as long as you don't exceed it. I have Nokian WR A3 205/55/16 94H XLs for my Yeti (has 94 W for summer tyres, but H is up to 130 mph), bought from Oponeo last year (May!) for £80/tyre. They've gone up a little recently but are still only £84, with the 94V XL at £88

I ran mine for 5500 miles over last winter and haven't noticed any wear on them - hopefully they'll be going back on the car this weekend, weather permitting.

MyTyres.co.uk.  Absolutely. Get the 16" and don't worry too much about the top end tyres. Face it, you're not going to be doing 100mph in the ****ty snow and ice and even the regular budget winter tyres are amazing compared to normal ones.

I bought the Nangkan Snow SV-2 just over two years ago and they have been great. £98 each at the time (including steels).  Can't go wrong!

One word of warning.....if the weather is "nice", ie dry, not pouring with :rain: rain / snow / sleet etc, and above the magic 7 deg C on average, the winter tyres really suffer under medium to hard cornering, acceleration and braking....so just keep that in mind when upsetting the local BMW owners!

Other than that....have a great time NOT sliding and drifting around in the snow and ice and a very Merry Christmas!
