Sudden loss of power (no limp mode)

Featured Replies

Morning all

Just experienced loss of power on the motorway in 5th doing about 70 I tried to gain more speed and nothing it did try to accelerate but I wasn't gaining any speed when changed to 6th it was even worse. When I left the motorway I stopped on the traffic lights. Turned the engine off and on again power seemed to have come back again. Can anyone tell me what this could be?

Does this sound like the turbo is on it's way out?

You need it scanned to confirm - but that would suggest limp mode - if the Turbo has never been cleaned or replaced it is highly probable that it is an over-boost due to sticky Turbo vanes.

Thank you for your quick response I will scan it at lunch! BTW How much is reconditioned turbo these days?

Here is the scan result, can anyone shed some light on this?

Searched on google for you, worth looking at this thread where he's fixed it:

Thanks a bunch mate I do think it could be sticky turbo and may need cleaning with Mr Muscle Oven cleaner!

Wouldn't a scan confirm these would be faulty?

Boost Pressure Control Valve (N75) faulty

Boost Pressure Sensor (G31) faulty

Use the Innotec kit it is much better than just using MrMuscle. Its about £40 from Ebay

It happened once so far didn't get it on the way tonight will give few more days and if the issue will resurface I will have a go on the weekend. Having the BKD engine looks like a it needs to be done from underneath the car, since I don't have a ramp I may need opt out for something else. I don't feel comfortable with crawling under a car with just a jack.

You could try the REVIVE kit, but you will need to clear the fault code afterwards. Although my personal experience with this kit has been a bit hit and miss, it depends how bad your turbo is.

This is the first time it went into limp mode hopefully it's not too bad!

My thoughts would be that if its done it once you are well on your way to being coked up. I would tackle the problem head on, hoping that it will just go away is not usually the best solution in the case of a seizing turbo due to carbon deposits.

If it has done it once it will gradually get worse, you don't want it dropping into limp mode in the middle of an overtake.

The odds are that it is the Turbo, very rare to be the other components and you'd more likely get an under-boost if the valve block or pipework is at fault.

You're in Hampshire right? Would you be able to do the cleaning process for me? Obviously not for free!

The cleaning process is not that hard, just be prepared to get a little dirty.

I certainly don't mind getting dirty did that many times before but it certainly looks like a pain on the BKD engine :(

Drove the car to work this morning no issues still.

I don't really want to start pouring things into it the turbo if it's still working ok. I know it has started once  and it will more than probably happen again but until then I do not have many options.

On the BKD engine you have a EGR cooler from what I understand you need to undo the rubber pipe from that cooler that goes into the turbo and drop your hose including the cleaning solution into the turbo and manifold. Can someone correct me if this is correct?

Anything up on the dash, is it diesel or petrol?

Nothing on the dash and it's a 2.0 Diesel BKD is the engine code.I have been told that turbos on these engines are very common to stick etc.

The car has not done it yet again so not too sure if I should carry on with the cleaning solution. Have spoken to a local mechanic and he was completely against using Dr. Muscle.

The scan is telling you what is wrong, I would be very surprised if it isn't the Turbo vanes.

I watched my mate clean my old A3 BKD and it was done up in the air on ramps (he called in a favor at a local garage) and dropped the exhaust off the Turbo and did it that way.

I would say that you could do the same up on ramps or axle stands on your driveway.

The other option is to see if you can find a local trusted independent garage that is willing to try a clean for you, they would be more willing if you suggested the Innotech kit. It is very important that it is left to do its stuff and the vanes are exercised whilst it is soaking.

+1

You should be able to carry out this cleaning process with a basic tool kit if you have a little automotive experience. If not do as is suggested above. Ask a local independent garage to carry out the work you have requested, ie use the innotec kit, no self respecting garage that I know of would just squirt Mr Muscle into a turbo and call it a solution.

When doing the cleaning I would couple this with an oil & filter change and a fuel filter change. The injector cleaner is then used to prime the fuel filter. Also whilst you are waiting for the kit to do its magic whip the EGR valve off and give that a clean (You could but specific cleaner or use one of the many cans of Mr Muscle that seem to be floating about. I think I am going to buy some shares in Mr Muscle. Just make sure all traces of the cleaner are cleaned up before you refit the EGR valve).

When all completed. Start car up and allow to warm up slowly. When warm Take for a nice long drive (spirited driving time - within legal limits of course)

I have just done a full service and oil, oil filter, fuel filter were all changed about a month ago.

Well I would just go ahead and do the cleaning then.

I am in north east london. I have the same problems. Can someone recommend a good garage to do this for me.
