fuel economy 1.4 tsi 2010

Featured Replies

I've had a couple of recent trips:

1st 220 miles at about 65-70 mph mostly but 47 mph average due to town driving in the middle, @ 44.5 mpg (filling to filling, assuming the fill level was the same), reported as 44 by the trip computer so it seems trustworthy

2nd 20 miles at a steady 55 mph reported as 58 mpg by the trip computer

(Speeds according to gps, not speedo)

I notice it's much less when doing really short trips from cold: about 30 mpg doing 2 miles only from startup.

Does that sound about right?

Sounds really good.

Same sort of numbers I got over 12 months of ownership of a 2011 from new. Typical driving for me was to drive smoothly tending towards a relaxed drive so if you drive the same way then yes those seem about right.

Thanks.

I have the same model 2010.Motorway I get around 55mpg and between 43-47 around town.

Ours averages about 40-41 year round but the wife does shortish trips to work and back.  On a run it will get up to nearly 50.

The main problem is the large coolant capacity, which means it takes about 4-5 miles for the gauge to get to 90 deg C in winter.  The gauges are normally very non-linear so it will take even longer than that for the engine to really reach running temperature, although it will have come off its "cold start" mixture by then.

Like all turbo cars, it returns much better mileage if you accelerate gently and avoid using too much boost.  In contrast, NA cars are normally most efficient if you really boot them to get up to cruising speed (I thrash my other car up to the red line and it returns about 7% better mpg than the manufacturer claims).

The trip computer on the Octavia is quite accurate.  My old Beemer diesel was 15% optimistic, which was ridiculous - 55mpg on the display meant about 47mpg in reality.
