Turbo shot - apparently "over spinning"

Featured Replies

So my car went in for repair after the boost pipe came loose between the turbo and intercooler on the turbo side. Whilst it was in for this, the turbo was diagnosed as having excessive play on the impeller shaft and needs replacing.

The car is under warranty and the warranty company (mapfre) wanted the turbo fault independently diagnosed. This came back as the failure being caused by the turbo over spinning. How could you diagnose this just by looking at it?

Also, what could the causes be?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

I don't think by looking you can diagnose it. When I had my car mapped last week he logged the boost and mine was over boosting by quite alot but i think that will be down to the decat but not sure.

Is yours decatted? If not could be the standard map causing the over boost as I'm not overly convinced my over boosting was down to the decat

The car is completely standard mate, and as far as I am aware has never been mapped. Skoda are looking in to it further to diagnose what is causing it.

How long had you had the boost leak?

Could over speed with a broken boost pipe mate, as it will get faster and faster trying to make the boost up

Good stuff chaps thanks. I wasn't overly aware I had a boost leak. First thing I knew was when the pipe came loose and I lost all boost. The whistle which was present after the pipe came loose was definitely not present at all in any way prior so if it was leaking boost it wasn't obvious. However I am a fabia vrs noob so it is quite possible I was overlooking something which may have been wrong over the 4000 miles I've had the car!

Can compare the state of the compressor to photos of known failures/faults. Much as is done with spark plugs. Missing tips and generally distressed blades are an indication of overspeed...
