Glass Cleaner in Place of IPA

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question.

I am prepping some old Seat Leon Cupra Alloys for spray dipping this weekend, these are going to see me through winter.  The dip from Cardip UK is similar to the american Plastidip and is going on as a temporary refurb solution over winter and in Spring I intend to give them a full sand down, prime and paint.  The wheels are in decent overally condition and have next to no damage to the face, any kerb damage has been absorbed by a pronounched protection profile at the outer edge of the rim, there are a few small points where the lacquer is broken and for this and aesthetic reasons I have decided to seal the face with spray dip.

I am wet and dry sanding the minor damage to the outer rim

The wheels are also getting a major decon:

Snow foam

APC

Tar-X

Iron-X

Not claying as the wheels lacquer coat isn't in 100% perfect condition

What I wanted to ask is whether I can substitute IPA with Glass Cleaner to do the final wipe down and make sure there is no wax, polish or other contamination left on the wheel face before moving to prep them for the spraying.

I'm faily confident that the Glass Cleaner would strip any wax and should leave a clean finish.

Why am I asking this?  Well for reasons I care not to explain I have ended up with 4 bottles of glass cleaner.

Note: I will be using the cheapest Carplan GC I have as my concern with Rapid Glass or others is that they leave behind a coating.

Any advice would be good.

Thanks

My guess is they all leave residue , isopropyl alcohol will evaporate but the other aditives will remain i think. Does this matter not really

Thanks Scribbler, this was my thinking, it's more of a practical question than a technical one I guess.

I know that technically IPA will probably be better and I understand it's uses as a panel wipe in detailing.

My guess is that for this particular application, the cheap Glass cleaner shouldn't leave enough behind to cause adhesion issues for the Plastidip.

certainly feels ultra squeeky clean on a test patch.

Meths will be ok too

use vinegar

What, to clean glass with?  I think there's a chance you misread the thread.

Only kidding, no offence.  The point really is I have an abundance of Glass Cleaner, my naive belief is that I can get this to function in a relatively similar way to a final wipe of IPA on what should be near spotless wheels saving me going out and getting the Isopropyl Alcohol and was looking to get some thoughts on this.

Now I do have Vinegar and Meths in the house.  Are we saying that these will work better?

Both I would say

My preference would be a wipe with a sponge applicator pad with a light glug of meths, then dry with a clean MF towel

It should be ready to accept a coat of anything then

Thanks once again Chris, that's what I will give a go with then.

Ive used Meths for this type of job before and find it works well..

I would water it down a little if youre nervous

No nerves, but equally no clue :)
