Adjusting a locked ECU

Featured Replies

I am considering having my 2013 170 diesel chipped, but understand the ECU has to be unlocked by the tuner.  I appreciate that the good ones can do this OK, but I am concerned on two counts:

1. If the dealer reflashes the ECU for any reason, the chipping has to be redone

2. Impact on warranty and resale by what is a clearly detectable modification.

Any experieces to report from those that have had this work done?

in answer to your questions,

1) Yes if the dealer flashes a new upgraded firmware to the ECU then the map will have to be done again using the new firmware as a base to work from.

2) Warranty will be voided on all affected parts, so for example the entire engine and drivetrain. However things like the radio etc, should still be covered.

For a tuner to flash the ECU, it is removed from the car and dismantled. Probes are then either soldered or pressure used to attach probes onto the motherboard.

I let Shark Performance do this to my 28k's worth of Yeti when it had less than 9,000 miles on the clock and I've never looked back! :) Iirc Shark offer to put the code back on for free if a dealer does flash it and if you are worried about resale (I wouldn't be!) then it can also be reverted back to a standard ECU file. :)

Shark Performance remapped mine at about 2000 miles.

See my project thread in the project section. There is a link to a thread I started when they were doing it.....

Hey yeti_man how much was the turbo conversion and re map? What is the 0- 60 ? Sound like it has alot of torque! Iu still got my first car in the garage a 1995 306 d turbo that I spent a fortune on! It has a hybrid turbo, fuel pump, air filter, radiator, camshaft, vernier pulley and full stainless steel devil exaust. Avo coilovers , khan wheels and full bodykit. Then I go married and had kids so decided a yeti was a good family car that is unique! Thinking of a trip to shark to chip our 170 thats on order. Will have to check the cost and try persuade the wife !

The initial stage 1 remap was around £450 with Freedom discount and offered amazingly good value for money. The basic K04 conversion was around 2.5k iirc but I had additional things done also. This should see you around 300bhp and 300lb/ft torque with relatively little boost! 0-60 if I had to hazard a guess then I'd say 5 seconds or slightly less if being aggressive with it. Anyway, back on topic, give Shark a call and see what you think. :)

I mean no disrespect but I think his data will be somewhat different as it seems he is referring to the CR170 diesel engine rather than the 1.8 petrol one, so the torque at least will be a lot higher if I am not mistaken.

Remapped 170CR engines can get up to around 225PS and about 350lb ft with DPF delete, my old Scirroco 170 DSG produced those figures, it was timed at 6.4 0-60 and 15.4 1/4 mile on the strip at Bruntingthorpe.

A standard remap should give you around 208PS and 300lb ft. The outright 0-60 figures are pretty irrelevant, it's the in-gear figures that really show the performance.

Joiner Andy enquired as to what my 0-60 time etc were hence me answering with the relevant details and quoting him, not the OP.

Ohhh you are right... Sorry, my mistake indeed. Between Yeti obsession and rest of living sometimes I dont pay needed attention.
