CR DPF regen side effects?

Featured Replies

Can someone else with a CR vRS (Mine is a 12 plate with 28k miles) tell me if when you have a DPF regen going on you find the following;

Rev needle twitches - when on motorway this morning the needle was twitching when just gently pressing on the accelerator, just keeping up with traffic situation. If you plant your foot this does not happen.

Lumpy non smooth drive - just feels like one second you have power, the next not a lot.

Anyone have this before? Not had a DPF light on at all - guessing it was doing a regen as when I stopped at a roundabout it was sitting at 1k revs - by the time I got to work it had settled at lower revs again.

I notice the higher revs it idle but that's about it. People say they can smell hot but I haven't noticed it personally.

Thank you, haven't noticed it doing this before so wondering if there is an issue and what it could be. Quite annoying as it was at the dealers yesterday for other bits  :wall:

Question is, would a dealer be able to replicate? Can they set a regen going and then do a test drive otherwise they'll probably never find the issue?

I'll get the car scanned and see if there is any errors on it.

I had a spell (now ceased) over a couple of months with  the cooling fan coming on regularly, and staying on for a good 5-10 mins after stopping.

I've since been told that it's quite common due to the re gen of the DPF vastly increasing the temperature under the bonnet.

Yes I have had this a few times, but not today so the regen finished before I parked up I assume.

Almost...ALMOST, can't wait for the DPF on mine to give up the ghost, thus forcing me into a fairly expensive (but vastly cheaper than replacement) removal.

Done 12k in mine since January, mainly 'round town driving too, AND it doesn't get ragged,(very often)  and haven't had any issues on the DPF front at all

Only just found out that the DPF is under the bonnet too!

I always thought it was buried underneath along the exhaust system somewhere, doh.

Ah but if you look at the excellent link gevans posted above the cleaver little bu**er of an ECU does a regen anyway ever so often based on milage if it's not done one recently whether it needs one or not to keep the soot levels down so you'll have to put some effort in. :giggle:

That will be because you interupted the regen before it finished it's 'thing' and the DPF was running at a higher temperature so the fans come on like a 'kin harrier jump jet and stay on until it's cooled down. I had this once after a drive to Milton keynes and we could hear the fans going at it inside the building next to where I parked! regen started up again on the way back and tickover returned to normal about 10 miles later.

Understatement or WHAT!?  :D

Near cacked meself the first time it did it!

Even the neighbours were curtain twitching to see what the racket was!

Thanks for the info anyway. Most helpful.

Tell you what did happen ...only once granted...that I thought my have been a re-gen.

I was standing at a set of lights not long after I got the car, and as I pulled away, there was the most enormous plume of white smoke from the exhaust. So bad, the Audi behind me had to virtually come to a standstill.

The weird thing was that it dispersed quickly, no lights on the dash, no noises, no change in engine note power or driveabilty, and it still remains a one off mystery to this day.

It was a warmish day, and the car was well up to normal temperature too after 15 miles.

Work that one out.

I noticed on a drive last week

that the car felt less responsive and fuel economy was not as good

I had my vag com with me, and when I stopped for a refreshment I had a look and it had just done a Regen

I'm not so sure it is related to the DPF and a regen now, maybe some of it was as it definitely was doing it but on the way home tonight I kept an eye on the revs and everytime I slightly press the accelerator the needle bounces - again if I press the pedal to the floor it doesn't do this. I'm sure it hasn't done this before.

Can anyone confirm on the same car what the rev needle does when driving at a steady speed then slightly press the accelerator - does the needle just go up as it should or does it bounce then rise?

I have used a OBD scanner and there is no error codes at all.

I can't assist with your situation but if it helps have a laugh at my expense:

Me (getting home from the gym): hey babes you alright?

Her: not really

Me <heart sinking>: ok, what's up?

Her: it's my car

Me <thinking the worst>: ok, what have you hit?

Her: I haven't hit anything

Me <very slowly so the dumb bitch gets it>: ok, so what's the problem?

Her: my car's got something wrong with it

Me: ok babes, give me a clue?

Her: well, when I parked it up earlier the engine made a loud noise even though I turned the ignition off and there was a funny smell

Me: DPF?

Her: what?

Me: sounds like your DPF babes?

Her: <silence>
