Which service to go for?

Featured Replies

Got a 10 plate vRs TSI which is on 10000 miles.

I have had a look at the service book and they have all been done on the same date for the 3 services with around 3500 miles

done each year. I will only be doing around 7-8000 a year and 90% of the time will be short journeys.

In the book for the first service it has oil change and inspection service ticked.

Second service it has the same plus engine oil for variable service intervals.

The 3rd service has this variable engine oil ticked again but no inspection service.

I currently have a 2 year service plan with Skoda so they will be for the 4th and 5th year service.

Am i best getting it changed to fixed service as for when i start paying on the 6th year service as they are cheaper and because of the type of driving i do?

Also in the book it has a box for tooth belt replaced, what is this and when does it get done?

Also was the toothed belt tensioning pulley replaced, again what is this and when does this get done?

Without a doubt the mileage and type of mileage you do would indicate fixed servicing - once a year or 15000 km.

To be sure, have a look at the Volkswagen web site where there is a check list for each type.

The toothed belt runs the timing of the valve can shaft by taking power from the crankshaft. It's at the front of the engine. (Behind a cover at the back of the belt turning the alternator.) Your's may or may not have one. Most people would replace the pully at the same time as part of a kit. Many would also replace the water pump at the same time since it saves labour costs.

Skoda UK have a four year rule about cambelts - suggest you take advice from your dealer as there are differing opinions on the matter and your car is very low mileage. As I said, your engine may have a diferent chain driven camsaft system, so take further advice from someone more knowledgeable, that is the dealer who is doing the serviceing.

TSI doesn't have a cambelt so you don't have that worry.

Fixed/annual would suit you. It comes up every 9500 miles so don't be surprised when it pops up earlier than 10k.
