Very bad mystery knocking noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My parents have a Yeti SE+ 2.0TDI140 DSG 4x4 with 14,000 on the clock and have a rather concerning loud knocking noise that is getting more frequent and louder.

The knocking is happening at speeds below 60mph and appears to happen when the suspension is triggered by roads that aren't flat/smooth. Obviously this sounds like a suspension problem.

The vehicle has been in to the dealer three times now and the garage have confirmed the knocking noise is there; they have completely disassembled the rear suspension and replaced some parts and cannot fix the noise. They have also contacted Skoda UK who have no advice.

The car is due for service in 2000 miles according to the trip and they have asked us to continue driving the vehicle until the service is due and they will check it again.

Has anyone else experienced this knocking before and had it cured or have any ideas?

Thanks

Andy

You need to provide a better description of the noise, I think.  For example, rough roads might cause the exhaust system to knock on the body if it isn't aligned correctly.

Anti roll bar drop links?

Hi I had a similar problem with a mini many years ago  it turned out ir was a pop bottle that a rear passenger had left in a side pocket

Took me ages to find it

Yes ARB's are often a culprit along with heat shields and poorly aligned/attached exhausts.

My lads Fabia gets a knocking from the front suspension on rough road surfaces, which the dealer states is ARB related but likewise they didn't fully cure it and the warranty is now well expired.

My 56k yeti has knocked and creaked from new and several returns to the garage have not cured it. They have heard it and even replaced the clutch assemble diagnosing a juddering clutch to no effect.

On brisk acceleration in first or second, particularly with some right hand lock on the steering it does it every time and is getting worse by the mile.....

Company car so I am now just living with it until it is replaced next year at 4 years old.

Would I get another Yeti?

Possibly but it would need to be quieter and have a more compliant suspension. i am thoroughly fed up now with crashing and banging over defects in the road and complaints from rear passengers about the harsh ride.

It could be such a good car......

I think they've tried that. I'll try and record the noise.

Just get the 16" wheels--I have these on winter tyres --transforms the ride--seems to glide over potholes etc!

Rather surprise by this, after 30 years plus of company cars including Passats, BMW's etc. I would say the Yeti rides better than most with barely any noise or banging over potholes. I must admit I have only done 6k miles in 12 months compared to the 36k I used to do in company cars and maybe after such large mileages it will start to bang and crash over bumps. Perhaps owners with more miles could pass their comments to balance out the comment.

Mine's done over 75k miles and hardly makes a noise. Yes there are a few creaks and groans but at that mileage I would expect a little "settlement" in the suspension bits. There is certainly no "crashing and banging", even on rough Forestry Stages.

I get a lot of creaks and groans but not from the car! :hi:
