Power Steering Adjustment using VCDS-Lite

Featured Replies

Hi,

Recently purchased a Skoda fabia 1 and within 500 miles the power steering light on, using the guide on here (very useful) and a VAG-COM i diagnosed a faulty pump. I purchased a new pump fitted it and all the fault codes cleared. However the power assistance is relatively small, I checked the blocks and they appear to be fine. I have read else where that the amount of power assistance can be altered so i guess mine is currently set to low. Therefore i was wondering if anybody could shed some light on how to adjust the assistance using VCDS-Lite.

Many thanks in advance,

Harry

Do you have VCDS scan of the power steering?

You need to code the new unit to match the old one?

You don't give any details for your car (year/engine code), but try 10110 if you have airbags or 01100 if you don't.

Hi,

Sorry its a 1.9tdi, X reg. The current code is 10110, is this what needs changing to adjust the assistance? I should be able to get a screenshot tomorrow.

Cheers Harry

What is the 3 character engine code from the options label (under the boot carpet or in the service log book)?

10160 will probably give you maximum assistance.

Can you alter the coding on VCDS lite?  I would imagine you need the full version to actually change the coding?  One of those numbers will / should be a 1 to 5 of PAS assistance.

However, in my experience even the hardest/least setting of PAS assistance is noticeable in helping, so I am wondering if there is something else wrong,

Yeah, I always thought you can't code in 'lite' too.

VCDS lite does everything you need for the early cars. (Demo doesn't allow coding)

The engine code is ATD, i tried code 10160 and you could hear the motor working harder, this was confirmed by VCDS. This made the steering slightly easier but still far to hard. Devonutopia I think your correct in thinking something else is wrong. I drove the car for two weeks with no power steering, could this have damaged the steering rack? Around the gaitors a small amount of fluid has appeared to have leaked, however when i changed the motors the original was at the minimum mark.

Thanks in advance,

Harry

If you think there is a mechanical problem, put the PAS back to 10110 ('Normal') so as to put as little strain on the pump as possible until you get it fixed.

10160 ('Handicap') provides the maximum assistance so the steering should be very light.

Cheers I've done that, do you think the problem I am having is due to not bleeding the system properly? I done it according to the haynes manual if not i presume it is a problem with the steering rack.

To bleed...

1. WITH ENGINE OFF remove cap and top up. With cap off, turn steering lock-to-lock 10 times. If the level has dropped then repeat.

2. Put the cap on LOOSELY. Start engine and run for 15 seconds. Switch off and top up. If the level has dropped repeat.

3. Put the cap on LOOSELY. Start engine and turn steering lock-to-lock 10 times. Switch off and top up. If the level has dropped go back to 1.

If the level is now steady, tighten the cap.
