Are My Lights LHD or RHD

Featured Replies

Hi

I have recently bought an unregistered LHD Skoda Fabia.

I am intending to drive it ion the UK, for 9 months before taking it  to Spain.

So in preparation for UK MOT and winter, I have been to the scrappy and bought 2 RHD headlamps.

Except, now I see them together, I cant tell any difference for the ones on the car to those I have just bought.

I did check the original beam and it looked as if it shone into the road rather than the kerb.

Both sets have the same serial numbers

246-365 and 246-366

 UM7

There is a headlamp symbol on them, all look the same.

Have I messed up. and bought a set of lights I did not need?

Or is the only to find out, is to fit and check beam?

Thanks

Mark

Yes, you've bought a set of lights you didn't need. Sorry.

Most modern European cars now have 'flat top' dip pattern headlamps fitted because they have clear polycarbonate lenses and generic reflectors, this is good for the manufacturer and means the headlamps are legal in LHD and RHD countries. The downside to this is that the road appears less well-lit when driving on dipped beam than with the older 'kick-up' beam patterns which needed converting for use abroad. This is why this forum is full of endless prognostications about which flavour aftermarket headlamp bulbs to use, expect another tedious 'which bulbs are best' thread any moment now.

The part numbers will be with something like 5J0 941 016

It’s the 3rd digit that denotes LHD/RHD:

1 = LHD

2 = RHD

0 = same part for both LHD and RHD.

They will be different lights for a LHD and RHD Fabia (so will not be 5J0)

You need to look for a part number on them which will probably begin with 6Y.  For the MOT it is acceptable to use a bit of tape on the lens to mask out the right hand kick up of the beam image to flatten the image, however you mustn't significantly reduce the light output.
