it it ok to leave car running in mornin to warm up?

Featured Replies

By the way - in Yakutsk - one of the coldest city in the world -  car engine is never stopped during winter if the car is parked outside :D

This is the extract of 'how to' guide:

It is obligatory to keep the engine running all the time when the car is outside in the winter period. The engine might be switched off only, when the vehicle is inside a heated garage. If the engine stopped, the accumulator will be frozen in a moment. In such cases, if no garages around, the accumulator is recommened to be warmed over bonfire or by a torch, and the metal protection shield under the engine needs to be heated up as well.

  • Cheap (£10) electric fan heater on parcel shelf, powered with extension lead from garage.   5 minutes running clears windscreen and all windows and you have a warm steering wheel into the bargain.

On a frosty morning, I start mine up, with the fans on the windscreen setting and the rear window defroster on, then I go round the car scraping ice off the windows.  By the time I've got back round to the front there are - usually - two bare patches where the heater has melted the windscreen ice, which helps me scrape the rest of the front windscreen off.  Now I'm no expert but I'm guessing that the heat has come from the diesel engine that has been ticking over.  Or does my Superb have some extra heater somewhere?

Point is, it's a diesel but on tickover it doesn't stay so cold that I can't clear the windscreen fairly quickly.  And once that's done I set off, and if it's really cold I put the heated seats on :)

An aux heater will show up as an additional controller in VCDS.
