Odd Camshaft problem

Featured Replies

Last week one of my customers came in with his 165K 2009 supurb 1.9pd, it had a loud knocking from the top end of the engine. there was quite a bit of the usual worn 1.9pd noise plus another louder knock.

I stripped the top end down and found the cam worn, all the lifters worn and the cam bearings totally shot.

the customer wanted it repaired as cheaply as possible, so i fited a cheap cam/lifters/bearings from a supplier i've used before, turned the key and it sounded lovley (well as nice as a pd can!)

But by the end of my second road test the knocking noise was back!!

stripped it down and found the cam bearings totally shot!!

I suspected duff bearings so i ordered a set of genuine bearings, again within 20mins it was knocking again.

At this point i checked the oil pressure, (at the oil pressure switch outlet), it had 45psi at idle rising with revs to upwards of 60psi

suspecting i the cam may be faulty i fitted a genuine cam and new genuine cam bearings this time it was less than 10mins running before the knock returned.

With my stethascope the noise is definatly located in the head, it is very slightly more defined above cylinder 2.

Evertime i strip it the cam bearings are shot there appears to be a lot of oil getting up to the head, but it doesn't seem to be reaching the cam in enough volume/pressure to keep the cam bearings alive!!

So my question is what can be starving the cam of oil?

or what else could be causing it?

Wrong Oil?

I changed the oil and filter when i fitted the first cam, same oil as i use for litrally hundreds of pd's including my own

Possible, there is oil getting into the Head though, is there a separate supply to the camshaft? I have a spare Head from a 2003 pd130 passat i'll have a good look at the oil pathways in it to see if it'll help me diagnose this one
