Bulb out light coming on random/weird symptoms

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm having some really weird issue with my car to do with the lighting system

Basically the bulb out light on the dash is coming on and I scanned the car with vagcom which it threw up a trailer light out fault code? the car has a towbar kit fitted but I haven't been towing a trailer. I cleared it but it comes back immediately

What makes things really strange though is

if I indicate left when the bulb out light is on, the left indicator on the dash blinks fast (as if I have an indicator out, but I don't) the exterior indicators blink normal

if I indicate right, the indicator blinks normal and the bulb out light will go out!

after it goes out from indicating right, once I use the brakes it will come back on..

also occasionally when he light is on my pdc sensors don't beep when I put the car in reverse..this is probably the most annoying part

I recently tried some led side lights but I thought they might be causing the fault so I pulled them out and fitted normal bulbs but the fault remains.

I have played with vagcom too, enabling certain features but I think it was fine for a few weeks before the problems started.

anyone experienced anything like this before? or have any clue to what the fault may be

Key thing here could be this statement, "I have played with vagcom too, enabling certain features but I think it was fine for a few weeks before the problems started."

Do you have the original coding saved? That's always best practice - I would revert to your original module coding, and see if the issue is still there.

These sorts of symptoms could be related to incorrect coding on a module. Or a problem with the module itself. Rule out incorrect coding first though.

well I only played with basic stuff like locking the doors when pulling off and tear drop wipes but I did change the brake light options as well to make them flash during heavy breaking which I have no idea whether it works or night and I tried to get both fog lights to come on which again didn't work I don't think. I didn't change anything else...especially nothing to do with the towbar or trailers.

worryingly though I don't think I did save the original

there is a button that says change to defaults I think will this work?

I know what your saying though, perhaps my comment makes it sound I was abit slap happy but I was careful with what I changed and it was only a couple options.

Does anyone know where the trailer cable plugs into inside the car? I thought maybe unplugging it may solve the issues as it could be water has got into it as its just tucked inside the bumper

Just really important to save your old coding, before changing anything. Sometimes things like this can happen.

There is no 'default' setting within a controller, no. There are simply too many combinations for that to be viable.

Were all the changes you made to the 46- Central Electrics module? Best would be to find another member with the same age car as you, who hopefully has a saved VCDS scan that you can compare the coding with.

You haven't got a saved scan in VCDS logs have you, from before you made these changes? Your old coding will be listed there, if you have.

Can't help you with the trailer side of things though, I'm afraid - no experience of fitting or coding for that.

Thanks for the reply mate, sorry I took a while but I've been away

yeah changes were just to the central electrics module

I'll check my laptop tomorrow and see if I have any data on it from before I made any changes, Ill also put a post in the vcds section to see if anyone else has the info I need.

cheers

Posted up a couple of codings from my old car in your thread in the VCDS section
