Help a frustrated Mechanic

Featured Replies

PLEASE can anyone with some Mechanical experience suggest wot is wrong ?

My son has a 19 yr old Jetta, the problem is, the engine fires up then dies immediately even if he has jis foot on the ' go faster' pedal , there is plenty of fuel.

I know it is not a skoda but I'm hoping someone has an idea.

More clues: age, engine size, carbs, injection?

Carb, no ECU, 1.1 Vag engine, age as above :)

Inline fuel filter?

Check the carb out, clean and the float not U/S, Choke problem?

Coil? Leads?

Could be carb, will do that 1st thanks :), maybe remove, blow with Air, then soak.

Dont think it is coil etc as it fires & dies.

it is an auto choke, one of the first introduced by Vag on the Jetta.

If the float is damaged or stuck then you won't get the full amount of fuel in the chamber. If it's not been run for a while then it may have dirt in the chamber.

Some Carbs have a sintered bronze filter in the body too.

I have to admit it's been a while since I touched a Carb and I'm not at all familiar with the VAG ones. Auto chokes are often the causes of problems. Can you remove the air filter and choke it yourself with a rag or your hand??

Will try 2 morrow & post update.

The autochoke was rekown for being crap on the small vw engines, also check the vacume connections as iirc the choke has vacume control

Sorry my mistake 1.3 :(

I had one of them......check the condenser for breaking down when loaded up.

ps not light metallic green on an E plate is it?

The Pieburg?? carb on these is a nightmare as I remember! Try to find a Webber replacement for smoother running??

There is a ballast resistor?(Sorry having to scrape the rust off my memory) on some motors that has the spark to the points!(What are those)! at 12v and when engine starts drops down to about 7v had the same problem on a v6 capri many years ago,the connnection was adrift so it would start fine but when it should drop to the 7v when started it would just die!

Following on from what Col said above I would have thought the waxstat autochoke has gone tits up and either under or overfueling the engine so it cuts out.

Sound like it could be the fuel cut-off solenoid. I've experienced this several times on old Solex carbs. I even carry a spare in my old VW Camper!

Have someone listen under the bonnet whilst you switch on the ignition - you should hear a fairly loud click from the solenoid screwed into the base of the carb. If not, there's your problem!
