Heater Heat exchanger

Featured Replies

Has anyone any experience of changing the Heat exchanger on a Tdi please?

How difficult are they to get at? [Last one I did was on a Lancia and started with "Remove front seats...."]

Any advice appreciated folks.

Many Thanks.

Dash out, heater box out I think.

Thanks Lummox - trouble is I have never removed a dash with airbags in.....!

Looking at your other post you say antifreeze is leaking inside the engine bay though. If the matrix leaks it goes inside the car. What is your problem exactly?

Water dripping underneath when stopped, but only (apparently) when the climatronic is "on", presumably then allowing circulation through the heater matrix. seems to come from the bulkhead area not anywhere near the block. I am also puzzled as there does not appear to be any damp inside the cabin! As in my other post I have just had the head gasket replaced so I was wondering if the additional presure could have caused it to blow!

Is the water clear by any chance?

Reasonably!

Then let me give you the good news that your car is perfectly ok and the clearish liquid dripping from the bottom of your car is condensation from the evaporator and is perfectly normal.

Enough to spread over about half a square metre in about 4 to 5 minutes?

To the untrained eye it can be a bit worrying yes.

OK folks. Thanks for that. I will keep an eye on it and see how it goes. Happy Motoring!

You would also notice a drop in the coolant level in the expansion tank if you were losing it through the matrix.

Thanks Stu - Haven't noticed any loss there, which was also a puzzle. I have never seen as much of an apparent loss with no effect on the expansion bottle!
