Spare wheel ...or not?

On my last company car. I had a puncture during heavy rain on the M1.I could not remove two of the wheel nuts, a police car pulled in behind me and told me to drive on the flat tyre and escorted me to the next slip road. They then asked me to ring breakdown assistance, they could not get the nuts off either, so if was lifted onto the recovery vehicle back and towed to a friends home address as everywhere was closed.

Next day I got ATS to come out who removed the wheel, fitted a new tyre as the flat was ruined, all in all, very expensive, a wasted over night, a ruined suit from kneeling down in the heavy rain. I often wonder if the tyre gunk kit if I had one would have kept me going on the M1 as the nail hole was tiny and the running on flat finished off the tyre

An alternative take on things, although the majority of posters seem to be firmly in the spare wheel camp. But it has got me thinking about buying a gunk thingy to keep in the back with the spare wheel as it's not a lot of money but could be an option for the sort of circumstances you describe.

I now have a spare, as a used kit was going reasonable cheap, however, tempting fate, I reckon I have driven well over 100,000 miles since I last had a puncture.

 

And if I did have a puncture on the motorway there is no way I would be using anything. A phone call to my recovery company and that is it!

 

When I worked for Vauxhall Fleet we actually had an instruction that we were never to change a wheel where ever we were.

Like you Graham, I went a very long time without a puncture in a car, probably in the region of 25 years. I retrofitted the spare in the Yeti just in case.Well about a month ago I found a bolt right on the inside edge of the passenger front tyre I was lucky really that I had just parked it in my driveway when I heard the air leaking although the tyre was inflated, within 5 mins it was totally flat. Given the position of the damage the gunk would not have worked. I would not have been able to get the car to tyre fitter without the spare wheel.

 

Also I would never attempt changing the wheel on a motorway. That's what I pay the recovery people for.

For two years running I have had a puncture (neither repairable) soon after fitting winter wheels. Was able to use the spare to get me to tyre fitters and I also keep a 5th winter tyre just in case. So I have needed both, the car spare and a winter tyre spare (kept in shed) for two years running.
