ISOFIX Car bases

Featured Replies

Does anyone have experience of using MaxiCosi ISOFIX bases with a car that has rear footwell storage? All the advice has been its a no-no due to the front support leg but was wondering if anyone can advise after practical experience? The car is a Peugeot 3008.

My son is 14 months old and we have just a couple of months ago switched him out of his Maxi Cosi Cabriofix which we were using with the Isofix base.

You can store things in the foot well but anything that covers the footwell floor is a no, the front support leg must have a clear path to stand on the floor and the base has a visual indicator to show it is firmly planted in place.  The leg plays a big part in preventing forward motion in the event of a bump.

Is the storage some kind of footwell bag or is it underseat storage?

Its a cubby hole built into the floor of the vehicle, it appears to stop the use of the isofix base according to Mothercare. Peugeot and MaxiCosi don't seem to really know!

Hi Mate,

I understand now, coincidentally my last car was a Peugeot 5008, which has those self same floor storage bins.  We actually had my son in a Cabriofix on the isofix base installed over one of these.  It never even crossed my mind that we were in the wrong and noone advised otherwise.  For me though the logic is pretty sound.  If you were unlucky and had an impact I can see that the base supporting leg could well stove in the underfloor bin which would give the base the chance to pivot forward, which you wouldn't want.

To be clear, don't let my ignorance sound like an endorsement btw, I am trying to say the opposite, or at least get it properly confirmed.

Not a problem, its easy to assume the manufacturer has accounted for this when they talk about isofix in the vehicle. Anyways, MaxiCosi are contacting Peugeot for me to get answers about this one...

If you remeber to also use the seat belt on the iso-fix base as many don't, it will stop the base pressing down on the storage bin top and possibly going through it. The iso-fix mount only stops the seat from going foward in an accident, the seat belt helps to stop or restrict any other movment including the base pivoting if the vehicle goes upside down.

Quick question about isofix, do all bases fit all cars fitted with isofix? We have a silvercross baby seat and I'm looking to get a isofix base for it but can't find anywhere on silvercross site that lists the compatability with which cars?

mother care has the list, as will all good pram shops.

I'm not sure you could be certain of that in a crash is the only problem, I appreciate the theory.

However I am a big +1 to the learn how to install it properly argument.

Things like leaving the handle up on the Cabriofix we had too, this acts as a crash bar in an accident.

The ones that have foot which goes into the foot well dont. We got a base and it fit in our mkI Leon but not my mkI Octavia.

We're using ours in the Touran which has floor storage.

The leg is only for stability and so shouldn't have any weight
