Filled up but fuel not registering on guage

Featured Replies

OK so I put £25 diesel on yesterday got back in the car and the fuel guage hasnt budged and the low fuel light is still on. Since then its been very slowly creeping up.

Anyone else seen this?

Didn't someone else have a similar issue very recently?

I had a '10 reg Honda Civic 2.2 ctdi that constantly did this to me on runs to Manchester Airport (why always when I had a plane to catch? no idea)

Running low, with maybe 15 miles left in the tank, and perhaps 40 to cover I did a splash and dash at a motorway services, putting in maybe a tenner as was cash strapped.

Didn't register any fuel increase at all.

Put in another after arguing with the attendant, still nothing.

It took another twenty quid to get a small increase.

I was convinced there pumps were broken and that I had been had, until it did it again.................................and then again.

It must have something to do with the reserve tank, I'm sure someone will explain.

I think the guage in these cars is electronically damped (it takes at least 30 minutes after filling for mine to stop rising).

I thought mine was stuck on full the other day, but its started going down now :( means I'll have to fill it up again!

fill up on a mk2 shud be an instant reading when ignition is turned on.

Stuck float or something?

Mine likes to stay on full for 150 miles or so, but never the other way round

Im fairly sure the ecu software sees a small change in fuel level - say 10 litres or less as likely to be just a change in car angle. It therefore ignores it and the gauge stays the same. It will eventually get to the correct indication because there is a long term averaging going on all the time.

In your case, £25 is maybe on the border of what it thinks is a refuel or just being parked on a hill. Otherwise its the garage shortchanging you on fuel or a sticking fuel level sensor - unlikey IMO.

I has this same issue the first time I filled my car up 7 weeks ago, still haven't filled up again apart from 1/4 of a tank from a can. It took about 80 miles to move down a notch.

Always easier if people say how many litres they put in.

£25 of diesel at todays prices should be over 4 gallons. (4 gallons being slightly more than 18 litres)

If 4 Gallons went in, the Reserve light should really go out.

Even if the reserve had nearly all been used.

9-10 gallon tank,

would be a half tank of around 4 1/2 - 5 gallons,

 a 1/4 tank of over 2 gallons.
