Does it come back if cleared? It could just be the legacy of a blown bulb which has since been replaced. I have had similar from time to time but they usually don't come back after clearing.

yeah keep on coming back on, what are back up lights anyway

I'm not sure on that one sorry. But if you can locate them, it does suggest one has blown, given the fault stays, or else there is a wiring fault in the relevant circuit.

Surely back up lights is just an American way of saying reversing lights?

Try another bulb. (or swap the left and right one over and see if the error changes sides)
