Trouble selecting 1st gear/reverse and gearstick getting stuck

Featured Replies

Hi, I sometimes have problems with my gearstick whereby I either can't select 1st gear or it gets stuck and I can't get it out of gear. This occurs when the car is running and at a standstill. So I'm usually parking (sometimes Im at the lights) and its first gear or sometimes its the reverse gear. When it gets stuck I try lifting the clutch a bit but I don't want to stall it and I usually end up forcing it out of gear. When it comes to 1st gear (at a standstill) if I cant select it, I usually lift the clutch and start again. This usually helps.

Its an issue Ive had for a while and I need to get it sorted as it went from happening very seldomly to a little more often. I wouldn't say it hinders my driving but its getting to the point where its not just an odd occurrence and I should get it looked at so any pointers/advice would be appreciated.

I have a non modified Skoda Oct 2.0 diesel from 2007.

When its cold I sometimes have to put mine into 2nd and then 1st to get it to go into gear but it has never gotten stuck in gear before. My bet is you need the gear linkages adjusting

Thanks Stu. I'll take it to a local garage to get it looked at. I hope it is the linkages as this sounds like a minor job compared to what else it could be.

Ours was the same. Detent mechanism to blame. Mechanic said can be caused by resting your hand on the gear stick whilst driving, thereby increasing wear on the springs.

I tend to do that a lot but I'll bear that in mind from now on.

Ours was replaced under warranty so no idea of £ I'm afraid, but problem getting into 1st and/or getting into reverse instead of 1st was completely resolved.
