H.I.D. light conversion in a Felicia?

Featured Replies

Has any one of you Girls or guys done this, I was passed by a bmw on a dark road ad he must have had  these fitted and  WOW, they really are bright   They made my lights look pretty pathetic, I drive on a lot of country roads at night and I think they would be well worth fitting, Ive seen them on the ebay, and the complete kit is around £80  but can you fit them in a Felicia fun?

yup had them in mine

Were they good? and were they easy to fit

piece of ..., brilliant for seeing but everyone flashes you and the main beam is terrible as one bulb does both

Ah, Not so good, I knew there would be a downside,

did you say bmw?

some have HIDs from factory.

the biggest downside is HIDs are not legal for Felicia.

even if you fit headlights with clear lens, washers and a self-leveling system, police will stop you and (at least) fine your a$$.

the felicia uses a H4 lamp, which has the dipped and main beam inside the same lamp, hence why it has 3 pins, there are hid kits available from the likes of ebay but you wont pass an mot test with them fitted unless you have the proper hid levelling gear too whivh would be quite tricky to sort out, also there are colour temperature limits too around 5600k if i recall, i would need to look it up tbh, my advice is dont bother wasting your time or money on it

^^^ what tom says, I have 12,000k in my celica, they look very pretty being blue however I can't see anything with the light they emit and they are an absolute police magnet :/

HID always, always, always, works better with a projector headlamp. Sadly the Felicia comes from an age when such things were not common on that class of vehicle. Happily though, with a bit of encouragement, the projector headlamps for a Polo 6N should fit......

The advantages of these are, not only projector dip-beam, but separate main-beam, which will work better than the standard Felicia one too.

Generally 4300k/5000k are considered to be the closest "white" to daylight whilst maintaining a good output of light. the higher the colour temperature ( k ) the bluer, and less effective, the light will be. There will also come a point where you run the risk of MOT failure/being pulled by Liz's finest.

I can't see them as a problem for the MOT test (England, Wales & Scotland), as long as the aim, beam image and colour are correct.  Northern Ireland does require that a cleaning device is fitted.

I have hid's in my felicia and only thing I had to do for mot is make the headlight level work so I did electric conversion as old one did not work. Mot man was happy with them

last time I checked, UK was part of EU (well... except Liz's NWO select club)

so the info found in link below should apply.

In a nutshell.. Exactly that, only vehicles with European type approval can legally use them on the road in the uk if you boil it down to its simplest terms, meaning that pretty much all aftermarket kits are illegal unless the car or a variant of the same car had them fitted as an oem factory fitted item, or unless the kit itself us type approved for the vehicle it's being fitted to.

I read up extensively on this a few months ago; HIDs are illegal in the UK UNLESS fitted at the factory; even if they were an option on your car, retrofitting them is not allowed.

Currently, they are not required to check for retro fitted HIDs during a MOT, but as I understand it, they WILL be from early next year, so if the rozzers dont catch you, the MOT station should fail you anyway.

Yeah, I know, I was gutted as well, especially as there is a HID kit for my Grandis and it looks great fitted with them - just not in the UK; maybe I will get it down if I decide to move back to China and take the car with me.

The UK legislation (RVLR) doesn't mention any type of light source. So the sentences: "The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law."
actually mean nothing as Halogens are not mentioned either.

If it were true it would also disallow the new LED lighting systems (Audi and SEAT), as well as LED DRL systems. It would blow the Pixel Lighting system on VW Phaeton and Passat.

Fordfan is a real-life MOT tester an has access to what actually goes on. So I think I'll be happier taking his word over an internet "investigator".

Due to the way the EU system works, there are now several HID kits that are around that are 'E' marked. I suspect that HID manufacturers are looking to maximise their income and are now making retro-fit systems to comply with legislation.

no that's not correct old rainbow, the types of permitted vehicle lighting are specially listed in the lighting regs, basically it is an exceptive list, so if it's not mentioned it's not allowed anything outside of this needs to be type approved for use in the uk

type approval is basically when they scrutineer a production vehicle for it's suitability for use on the highways, a vehicle with halogen or hid or metal halide lamps or any other kind of lamps would have been selectively approved in this way.

the other exception to this is vehicle specific retro fit kits which have also attained a type approval status for a use, but i guess the ebay stuff wont have this?

Which section is that in?

First I've heard of this.  So how do you get to hear about this before the people at the testing stations do?
