Had a tussle with a new shape BMW 330i

Featured Replies

I have driven enthusiastically in my car following my mate in his BMW 330 club sport auto, and he never managed to pull away. But I know the older car is about 30hp less than the new one, and a touch heavier, and attached to an auto box, then driven cross country won't really be the fastest point to point in the world.

So, this morning I spotted this 330i driving enthusiastically, so I knew when provoked he would bury the pedal, showing yet another boy racer know doubt what a fast car should look like..........

Well he did, and he didn't. A slow exit from the round about gave me the opportunity to hang back, then floor it before he did - and it worked, as I gained on him his boot dropped, then he ran out of gear and I was getting closer and closer - then we hit the point where both cars are accelerating at the same pace, then there came the bit just after his 3rd when a gap was made, which increased rapidly, until someone pulled out on him - so I was back behind him. Once again a little strategy was called for, so I backed rights off, waited for the slower car pulling in and went for it, then the BMW started accelerating by which point I was closing the gap - then there was the bit where I caught up and he started pulling again etc etc............

We both decided that my car had lovely midrange ability, and my strategy does make my car seem fast.

However I established that in no uncertain terms that the 330i is a much quicker car than the Fabia and possibly an Octavia. Sounded very nice also.....but a good car ???????

There's only a second between the 330 and a remapped Furby on the track in Auto Express's greatest drives, and the beemer definetly handles better. Points to it not being that much quicker.

Its a BMW - therefore NO ;) :P

What's with 330s engine note? It's rank.

Yore not remapped are you Andy?

0-60 in the low sixes and 155 mph, it sure is faster than either, but a remapped Octy would match it (or maybe better, IMO). My mates remapped Ibiza FR 1.8T kept surprisingly close with an M3 once up to about a ton. After that though it was all over...

My car is a standard car - enthusiastically driven will lots of will power ;)

I used the same bit of road this morning to entertain a 04 Alfa 156 2.5 V6 and he couldn't get away - whoooo

I don't think so.

The straight six sounds really nice on full chat.

My friend has a 330 convertible and it sounds better at lower revs - nice and deep. Higher revs it gets less rumbling and more cheap... If that makes sense...

soooo, you're car was quicker than a car that was basically stuck in traffic....until the road cleared? result!

330i. ci or whatever will out drag a standard vRS of either model. a mapped octy will have it though.

what have i missed? you put your foot down before the other guy and started to gain, then he began to pull away until a slower car pulled out and forced him to ease off and then the same thing happened when you did the same thing again
