SWMBO is looking for a new motor - help please

Featured Replies

Hello All,

After a year of ownership, my good lady has decided that her 58 plate Yaris 1.3 is not what she wants - it's just too slow. She has to travel on roads where a bit of overtaking is needed and the Yaris just doesn't cut it, and I have to say that I agree with her.

As an Octavia VRS owner, I thought that a Fabia may well be a good option for her. A VRS would be too much, but perhaps a 1.2 TSI 105BHP? This should give her the extra overtaking capacity without going crackers.

I think she'll be looking to pay up to about 9K.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Is there anything that we should look out for, any gotchas?

Is the DSG a worthwhile option, or is that extra technology a timebomb waiting to go off?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I love the dsg personally and have had no problems

For 9k try n get something with a remainder of manafacture warranty,or if poss extend it just in case

As for the vrs being 'too much' i find it like any other car ( until pushed)

Maybe test drive both 1.2 and a vrs?

DSG and 105 engine are a good combination, the 1.2 105bhp is well received, and well reviewed by everyone, you would be suprised... the 7-speed DSG is very reliable, and doesn't need servicing, so no real issues there

but as Daz says above, the vRS can be pottered around in, mine is modded for the track, yet I use it for driving lessons and it can be driven just as slow as you like ;)

if you go for a vRS though, contact the previous owner and make sure its not an oil burner ;) my local garage knew the one I traded in was good, and it sold almost instantly!

Thanks for this.

The only problem I see is that the VRS may have been well used by someone who has driven it like I drive mine

It will hardly of been used to 100% of its performance almost all the time,

a 105 ps one might regularly have been ragged to an inch of its life.

Buying a 69- 86ps car that looks like it might be faster than it actually is,

can maybe be a sure way of buying a hard used vehicle.

hmmm, good point

Monte Carlo CR 105. Biased, but just saying. Same power, more torque, better economy...

Having driven a number of Fabia's, Octavia's and Yeti's with the 1.2 TSI 105 and 86 engine I'd say go with the DSG in a Fabia if you're after a 105. The manual 5 speed box in the Fabia works better with the 86 than it does the 105, which really needs a 6 speed.

Also try go as new as possible, as the engine has undergone a number of ongoing improvements since launch back in late 2009.
