Alternator not charging battery

Featured Replies

My battery ran out, I replaced the alternator.

The new one still isn't charging battery, the fuses are all ok.

The battery light doesn't come on at all.

Any suggestions?

Update Just charged the battery , drove it for ten mins and the battery ran out. It's a good battery so could it be something else?

Load signal cable broke I suspect. Search as it's a very common problem

+1 I'm with Dan

Yup I had this and my battery light didn't come on either.

Load signal cable, quick fix with a repair wire and a couple of

connectors and you'll have no more problems with it I reckon.

Nope, the load signal cable is fine . Any other suggestions?

How did you test it? The insulation may look ok on the cable but the copper may have snapped inside. I would advise a continuity test to make sure the cable is in good health. Other than that I really don't know pal

If not that or something similar, then either alternator or altenator pulley or your wiring's fritz'd between the alternator and the battery.

If you have access to a multimeter then that will be a good start. A healthy alternator should push the voltage when measured across the battery terminals up to around 14.4 volts. If it doesn't achieve much more than battery voltage when running at around 1500rpm then you do have a problem.

Ok guys , it must be the load signal cable. I checked this by connecting a wire into the alternator at the signal cables connection. I then fired up the engine and touched this wire to the battery. The multimeter then showed that the alternator kicked in. A simple good quick fix. Keeps me going until I get a chance to replace/ repair the signal cable. Only problem is I have to do this every time I start my car.

Cheers for all the help.
