21mpg right?

Featured Replies

As above I'm only getting 21mpg if I'm lucky 2.8t 4x4 stage 1, mostly around town driving but I don't drive it that fast (sensible driving) as mostly got children in car, I just seem to be filling it up all the time, no engine lights? Is there anything I can check or do to get better fuel economy?

Thanks

At stage 1 driven "normally" you shoul be getting better but driving style is a major factor. If you are unsure of the history then start with air filter, tyre pressures, tyre size(are they 205/55/16 or have they been changed?) then you are into boost and vac leaks in the various pipes around the engine, if you can you need to do a coasting stop from 60 into a layby(I.e. No brakes) then hop out and check if centre of rims are hot(either binding brakes or possible bearing issue if they are).

If the plugs are old then renew and gap accordingly

 2.8t 4x4 stage 1

sounds awesome

21mpg for a turbo v6 sounds about right

(typo ? :giggle: )

Perhaps not so good for a 1.8t

The 4x4 isn't the best town car for fuel, but 26+mpg

I did see that and think "nice" then saw the user details :D.

Hi thanks for the replys I has had a service, all new also the tyre size are 225/40/18, I think. The car performs well? So could I still have vac leaks? Tyre pressure fine, maybe it could be breaks?

Is the temp gauge getting to 90 and staying there?

Yeah I change temp sensor about 3 months ago, but I did get a cheap one for local parts store? Well it was green

My bad, 1.8t lol

Folks reckon the cheap ones are tat but Ive no experience and only fitted genuine VAG ones.  Possible it could be that.  Could be many other things too.

I no it's a hard one to fix really, I will just have to replace all the parts on the car maybe that will fix it lol

No fault codes?

225's will have a negative impact on economy over the standard 205 width. I am running 195's winters on 15" rims and get better than 30 round town and between 37-45 on a run depending on how I drive.(I do have other mods which aid this though like 6spd gearbox)

Do you have a boost/vac gauge fitted? As I would expect a stage 1 to be boosting to 20 psi peak and pulling 25-30 inches of vacuum on the overrun. Easy way to check if you can get someone with Vagcom to scan block 032 it will let you know if there is a vac or boost leak.

A work colleague recently bought a Leon Cupra 1.8T, which was getting 15 - 20mpg no matter how gently he drove it.  Scanned it and there were no fault codes, I suggested changing no 1 lambda probe using a (not cheap) genuine one.  He now gets a more respectable 30mpg.

Edited to add, that I've come across the same before on a 2 litre Golf, no codes, poor fuel consumption, lambda probe fixed it.

Were the emissions ok on the Leon?

Bad move aftermarket CTS's rarely work properly. Genuine VAG only when it comes to engine sensors.

Thanks for all the replays again, I have vagcom and no I haven't got no codes, so a suggestion is to get a new lamba? Maybe the cause also a genuine cts, I will give it a go :)

How long are your trips? (sub 10min) If I only do a short trip it ruins my mpg.

  • Author

Yeah typically 10-20mile trips, is there a way to test lamba sensor?

Go into engine measuring blocks when the engine is up to temp, & have a look at the temp the ECU is getting from the CTS. You cannot rely on fault codes from some of the engine sensors as there are several that the ECU only throws a code for  when they either short to ground or become intermittent. CTS & MAF sensors are good examples as they can both be goosed without the ECU throwing a code.

Ok, i will do, but what am i looking for and on what blocks?

thanks

Think it comes up in engine blocks 2 & 4. IIRC.

Mine has given poor mpg for years low to mid 20s. I thought they were all like that. So, I'm presuming they have 2 lambda sensors pre and after cat? And its the pre cat that causes poor fuel economy?

I two I'm wondering the same as meaty. Mine used to do high 30's around town but lucky if I see over 20 now. I have decatted it since though.

Pre cat lambada they say should be replaced every 100k there abouts..as they get lazy.

Have you changed the thermostat?

Just there common to go wrong..I've replaced mine recently..and was showing normal on the gauge..but in vag-com it was showing little over 80c.

This could be an interesting thread. For reference, my stat was changed maybe two years ago as it was stuck open. Mine is just serviced including new plugs. Its very well kept. But mpg never improves. And its on 117k so the sensor could be at fault.
