Dash Getting Festive e.g lights are back!

Featured Replies

Well, the issue is back... and sorry in advance to the looooooooooong post

When the weather is a little chilly, my car develops a fun fault.

I had driven to work on fri morning all fine, then to sarni shop a few hours later. and on way back it started.

It starts jolting, like a miss-fire, which is the first sign. Then the basically cuts out. Lights which lit up were glow plugs (flashing), Engine Management (constant) and i think the traction control/abs light.

As soon as these lights come on, the car drives fine with no more jolting etc/

The traction control light has gone out.

Plugged into VCDS lite and the following codes came up;

^the wire to this sensor isnt connected, its on my do to list to fix.

When this first occurred 3 years ago i had the cam sensor replaced.

As this issue only shows up say 3 times a year its a hard one to deal with. like i say, it happens when the air is cold outside, but with no consistency, it will be fine in snow etc, but on day where its only a little chilly it occurs.

As soon as i pulled over i checked the rev counter and it was working fine, but this was obviously after the issue had happened.

Ideas please??

Also forgot.to mention after a while the lights turn off and all is well again.

So...

Anyone??

Engine speed is measured from the crank sensor, replacing that/checking its wiring would be a starting point.

That was my thoughts, don't suppose anyone knows where it is on a pd130?

sensor is down the front of the block between the oil cooler and the bellhousing mate and a pig to get off.

the plug is on the block behind the dipstick tube area,

could be a bad sensor or a bad earth somewhere.

well, looks like i've found my problem, shoddy wiring repair. unfortunately I only figured this out once I had bought a new sensor. (and a little annoyed this wasn't picked up 3years ago when my mechanic first looked at it)

As you can see, the wire into the connector has either snapped or come loose, and repaired quite badly. I soldered the new / old wires together as a stop gap, but ordered a new connector today.

Does anyone have any idea how the connectors fit together / come apart?

Also, as i am guessing i cannot return the crankshaft sensor as I've opened the box, i might as well change it as its not a difficult job. could someone confirm if i need a specific spine socket (if such a thing exists) or will this do http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-pro226-8pc-38-deep-multi-drive-socket?da=1&TC=SRC-spline

ANNNND finally, any idea how i can find out which abs sensor is knackered as per the error codes in my first post.

Thanks!!!!
